Georges Lagrange (born November 23, 1929 in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne , † December 11, 2014 ) was Bishop of Gap .

Life

Georges Lagrange entered the great seminary of Belley. After studying philosophy and theology at the University of Lyon, he was ordained a priest on June 29, 1955 . He was vicar in Bourg-en-Bresse and chaplain of Catholic Action. In 1964 he was part of the action Fidei donum for the rural Catholic action in Algeria and from 1966 to 1972 he worked for the action in France. In 1972 he became pastor of Saint-Didier-d'Aussiat, Saint-Sulpice and Curtafond in his home diocese of Belley-Ars . From 1983 to 1986 he was again active as a Fidei donum priest in Dakar, Senegal. In 1986 he took over the parish in Montluel.

Pope John Paul II appointed Lagrange Bishop of Gap on July 11, 1988. The Archbishop of Dakar Hyacinthe Cardinal Thiandoum donated him episcopal ordination on September 18, 1988 ; Co- consecrators were Bernard Panafieu , Archbishop of Aix , and Guy Claude Bagnard , Bishop of Belley-Ars. In 1999 his announcement of traditionalist positions caused a sensation within the diocese. Bernard Panafieu, now Archbishop of Marseille , then carried out a canonical visit on behalf of the Vatican to rectify the situation.

On November 18, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his premature, health-related resignation. Then he retired again to the diocese of Belley-Ars. Georges Lagrange died on December 11, 2014 at the age of 85 and was buried four days later in his birthplace, Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne.
