Hyacinthe Thiandoum
Hyacinthe Cardinal Thiandoum (born February 2, 1921 in Poponguine , Senegal , † May 18, 2004 in Aix-en-Provence , France ) was Archbishop of Dakar .
Life
Thiandoum's father was a catechist . He entered the seminary of Dakar and received on April 18, 1949 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre , the apostolic envoy to the French-speaking areas of Africa, the ordination . Two years later he began studying theology in Rome and returned in 1953. Thiandoum worked as a priest at the cathedral in Dakar in 1960, and a year later as vicar general .
Hyacinthe Thiandoum was named Archbishop of Dakar in 1962, succeeding Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The episcopal ordination donated to him on May 20, 1962, the then Internuntius for Senegal and later Archbishop of Reims , Émile André Jean-Marie Maury ; Co- consecrators were Bernardin Gantin , Archbishop of Cotonou , and Prosper Dodds , Bishop of Ziguinchor .
He was a participant in the Second Vatican Council . Pope Paul VI appointed him cardinal on May 24, 1976. His titular church was Santa Maria del Popolo . He attended the conclave of August 1978 , which elected Pope John Paul I , and also the conclave of October 1978 , at which Pope John Paul II was elected.
Until 1987 he was President of the Bishops 'Conference of Senegal and Mauritania , an elected member of the World Bishops' Conference . Thiandoum was known for numerous interreligious contacts, u. a. to Muslims of his country, such as Thierno Saïdou Nourou Tall .
Thiandoum resigned as Archbishop of Dakar on June 2, 2000 and died on May 18, 2004.
