Cardinal Théodore-Adrien Sarr (born November 28, 1936 in Île de Fadiouth , Senegal ) is retired Archbishop of Dakar .

Life

Thédore-Adrien Sarr, one of seven siblings, studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminaries of Hann and Sébikhoutane . Sarr received on 28 May 1964, the sacrament of the priesthood by Archbishop Hyacinthe Thiandoum . Then he was sent to the University of Dakar for further studies , from which he graduated with a degree in Classical Languages .

Sarr was involved in Catholic Action and worked as a pastor in the parish of Saint-Thérèse. He later became a professor at the seminary of N'Gasobil and 1970, finally rain this seminar.

On July 1, 1974, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the bishop of Kaolack . The episcopal ordination took place on November 24th of the same year in Kaolack by Hyacinthe Cardinal Thiandoum; Co- consecrators were his predecessor as Bishop of Kaolack, Théophile Albert Cadoux MSC , and the Bishop of Ziguinchor , Augustin Sagna . Théodore-Adrien Sarr was appointed third Archbishop of Dakar on June 2, 2000 by Pope John Paul II .

On November 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Lucia a Piazza d'Armi in the College of Cardinals .

Théodore-Adrien Sarr is President of the Bishops' Conference of Senegal, Mauritania , Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau and first Vice-President of the Symposium of the Apostolic Conference of Africa and Madagascar. On February 14, 2009 Benedict XVI appointed him. also as delegated President of the Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops taking place in October of the same year .

After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Sarr participated in the 2013 conclave .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on December 22, 2014.
