Bernard Louis Auguste Paul Cardinal Panafieu (born January 26, 1931 in Châtellerault ; † November 12, 2017 in Carpentras ) was a French clergyman, Archbishop of Marseille and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Bernard Panafieu, son of bank director André Panafieu, studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Albi and Issy-les-Moulineaux and received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Albi on April 22, 1956 . He then worked as a parish chaplain, school chaplain, student pastor and from 1973 as general secretary of the Albi Priestly Council .

On April 18, 1974, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Thibilis and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Annecy . He was ordained bishop on June 9, 1974 by the Archbishop of Albi, Claude Marie Joseph Dupuy ; Co - consecrators were Jean-Baptiste Sauvage , Bishop of Annecy, and Henri Clément Victor Donze , Bishop of Lourdes . On November 30, 1978 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence and on August 24, 1994 as Coadju Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Marseille, whose leadership he took over in April 1995.

On October 21, 2003, John Paul II accepted Panafieu as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gregorio Barbarigo alle Tre Fontane in the college of cardinals . Cardinal Panafieu was a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace . He took part in the 2005 conclave in which Benedict XVI. was elected Pope.
