Paul Joseph Jean Cardinal Poupard (born August 30, 1930 in Bouzillé , France ) is a Cardinal Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Paul Poupard, son of a farmer, studied at the Universities of Angers and Paris and received his doctorate in Catholic theology and church history . On December 18, 1954, he received the sacrament of ordination through Stanislas Courbe . He then worked as a lecturer and scientist before he joined the French department of the Vatican State Secretariat in 1959 . From 1972 to 1980 he was rector of the Catholic Institute in Paris .

On February 2, 1979 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Usula and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Paris . The then Archbishop of Paris, François Cardinal Marty , donated him episcopal ordination on April 6, 1979; Co- consecrators were André Pailler , Archbishop of Rouen , and Jean Orchampt , Bishop of Angers . On June 27 of the following year he was given the title of archbishop and was entrusted with leadership tasks in the secretariat for the non-believers.

He organized and led several synods and conferences around the world and represented the Pope as the papal envoy. In 1996 he was elevated to cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Prassede .

Paul Poupard attended the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen to participate. After his election, he confirmed Poupard in his office and on March 11, 2006, he also transferred the office of President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .

On May 24, 2007, Cardinal Poupard was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity . On June 25, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. resigned from his post as President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and appointed Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran as his successor. This step took effect on September 1, 2007.

On September 3, 2007, Benedict XVI. Poupard's resignation from his office as president of the Pontifical Council for Culture and appointed Gianfranco Ravasi as his successor in this office.

Cardinal Poupard did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he reached the age limit of 80 years . In August 2015 he took part in the celebrations for the 1000th anniversary of the Strasbourg Cathedral as the papal representative .
