André Pailler

André Pailler (born November 16, 1912 in Henvic ; † August 16, 1994 ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, Archbishop of Rouen and Primate of Normandy .

Life

His father Claude Pailler died in Corfu during the First World War when André Pailler was five years old. As a war orphan , young André became a pupille de la Nation . He attended the school in Henvic and later the college in Saint-Pol-de-Léon . In 1929 he entered the Quimper seminary , where he became a teacher in 1935. The ordination received André Pailler on 22 July 1935 in the Cathedral of Quimper. In 1936 he obtained a doctorate in philosophy and theology. During the Second World War he was drafted in 1940 and was a prisoner of war until 1945 . He then became a pastor near Brest .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on April 7, 1960 titular bishop of Adada and auxiliary bishop in Rouen. He was ordained bishop on June 14, 1960 by the Archbishop of Rouen, Joseph-Marie-Eugène Martin , co - consecrators were André-Pierre-François Fauvel , Bishop of Quimper , and Jean-Marie Mazé MEP , former Vicar Apostolic of Hưng Hóa ( Vietnam ) . On May 19, 1964, André Pailler was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Rouen , after the resignation of Joseph-Marie-Eugène Cardinal Martin on May 29, 1968, he succeeded him in the archbishopric of Rouen. André Pailler attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

On May 6, 1981, Pope John Paul II granted his resignation.

André Pailler died on August 16, 1994 and, according to his wishes, was buried in his hometown of Henvic.
