Joseph Marie Louis Duval (born October 11, 1928 in Chênex , Haute-Savoie , France ; † May 23, 2009 in Saint-Jorioz , Haute-Savoie, France) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Rouen and Primate of Normandy .

Cardinal Léon-Etienne Duval , the former Archbishop of Algiers, was his uncle.

Life

Joseph Duval attended school in La Roche-sur-Foron (Haute-Savoie) (Collège Sainte-Marie) and studied at the Law Faculty of Paris and the Seminary of Annecy . He received his doctorate in law and canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Annecy on June 8, 1952 . After a short time as vicar of the parish Saint-Maurice d'Annecy (1957-1958), he was Professor of Canon Law (1958-1963) and Professor of Moral Theology (1963-1971) at the Seminary of Annecy. From 1971 to 1974 he was Episcopal Vicar.

On May 14, 1974 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Bishop of Cannae and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Rennes . He was ordained bishop on August 1 of the same year by the Archbishop of Rennes, Cardinal Paul Gouyon (1910–2000); Co - consecrators were Jean-Baptiste Sauvage (1908-1991), Bishop of Annecy, and Raymond Joseph Louis Bouchex , Auxiliary Bishop in Aix. In 1978 he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Rouen. Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Rouen in 1981.

Joseph Duval was President of the Episcopal Commission for Christian Unity (1984–1987), Vice President (1987–1990) and President of the French Bishops' Conference (1990–1996). During Duval's tenure as chairman, the impeachment of the Bishop of Evreux, Jacques Gaillot , fell after the latter had spoken out in favor of the use of condoms and in favor of homosexuals , priestly marriage and the ordination of women . Duval had vainly opposed impeachment in Rome.

On October 16, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted Duval's retirement from the office of Archbishop of Rouen. Until November 18, 2003, he was Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese.
