Jacques Jean Edmond Georges Gaillot (born September 11, 1935 in Saint-Dizier ) was Catholic Bishop of Évreux for 13 years . After a conflict with the Vatican and his impeachment , he has been titular bishop of Partenia and internet minister since 1995 .

Life

Beginnings

Jacques Gaillot was on September 11, 1935 in Saint-Dizier in the southern Champagne, the son of a wine merchant's family was born and went to the middle school, the seminary of Langres . From 1957 to 1959 he made in Algeria the military service , who confronted him with the violence of war. This experience aroused in him a willingness to be non-violent and aroused a deep friendship with the Algerians.

From 1960 to 1962 he stayed for postgraduate theology studies in Rome in order to obtain a licentiate . In March 1961 he was ordained a priest . From 1962 to 1964 further studies took place in Paris at the Institut supérieur de Liturgie . Gaillot taught at the Grand Séminaire of Châlons-en-Champagne . From 1965 to 1972 he taught at the Regional Seminar of Reims in the context of the implementation of the innovations of the Second Vatican Council .

In 1973 he was appointed pastor in his hometown of Saint-Dizier. At the same time he was jointly responsible for the training of the priestly formators in Paris at the Institut de formation des éducateurs du clergé (IFEC). In 1977 he became vicar general of the diocese of Langres , and in 1981 he was elected vicar capitular.

Bishop of Evreux

On May 5, 1982 Gaillot was appointed Bishop of Évreux. The episcopal ordination took place on June 20, 1982, the Bishop of Langres, Léon Aimé Taverdet , assisted by the co- consecrators Jean Vilnet , Bishop of Lille , and Archbishop Joseph Duval of Rouen .

Jacques Gaillot campaigned publicly for various people and issues:

  • In 1983 he supported a young man in court in Évreux who had refused to do military service on grounds of conscience.
  • At the annual meeting of French bishops in October 1983, he and another bishop voted against a text by the episcopate on nuclear deterrence.
  • In 1985 he sympathized with the Palestinian uprising in the Israel-occupied territories and met the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Tunis .
  • He attended an extraordinary UN meeting on disarmament.
  • In July 1987, he visited a young anti-apartheid activist from Evreux in South Africa, who had been sentenced to four years in prison by the Pretoria regime.
  • In November 1988 in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes , he secretly advocated the ordination of married men at a plenary meeting of French bishops.
  • In October 1989, on a trip by the peace movement to French Polynesia, he campaigned for the nuclear weapon tests to be stopped.
  • In 1991 he published the book "Open letter to those who preach war, but let others wage it", in which he rejected the 2nd Gulf War and the economic blockade against Iraq.
  • He held a three-year synod and wrote about a dozen books. The book Coup de gueule contre l'exclusion (protest cry against the exclusion) attracted particular attention as a sharp criticism of the immigration laws of the then Interior Minister Charles Pasqua and was later named by the Vatican as the main reason for his removal.

On January 13, 1995, Gaillot was allegedly replaced by Pope John Paul II as Bishop of Évreux and transferred to the titular seat of Partenia under pressure from the French government, in particular from the Interior Minister Charles Pasqua . About 50,000 Catholics from all over France traveled to his farewell service in Évreux in 300 buses and three special trains.

Since the withdrawal

Bishop Gaillot initially announced that he would actually go to this place in what is now Algeria and continue his work from there; However, due to the political situation in Algeria, he soon withdrew from it. He then revived the diocese, which perished in the 5th century, as the "Diocese without borders" on the Internet . With the help of modern means of communication, he communicates with people all over the world over the Internet from his monastery in Paris .

Bishop Gaillot works in Paris for foreigners who do not have valid residence papers (“ sans-papiers ”), for homeless families and for young unemployed people.

On the occasion of the invitation to an ecumenical meeting with the bishops in May 2000, the President of the French Bishops' Conference wrote in an open letter to Gaillot: “It is important that Catholics and the public in general know that we are indeed united by a fraternal bond if this bond is also lived in a special way. "

In 2004, Gaillot was twice banned from appearing in his diocese by Cardinal Joachim Meisner , which Gaillot complied with in so far as he was present at at least one of the two dates but did not give a lecture. In 2012 Gaillot gave a lecture at the Museum Schnütgen at the invitation of the Karl Rahner Academy in Cologne .

On September 1, 2015, Gaillot had a private audience with Pope Francis . The meeting was described as "a face-to-face meeting of two men united by their feelings and commitment to the poor". A year earlier, Bishop Gaillot wrote to the Pope asking for support.
