The Karl Rahner Academy (spelling: Karl Rahner Academy Cologne) is an independent Catholic city academy in Cologne . It sees itself as an independent discussion forum in the "Kulturquartier am Neumarkt" in the center of Cologne and addresses people who are interested in theological, philosophical, cultural and social issues. A high proportion of participants with a university degree are reached, even beyond the borders of the city of Cologne and the Catholic Church .

The sponsor is the "Karl Rahner Academy Cologne eV". The association was founded as the "Catholic Men's Work of the City of Cologne" and renamed itself to "Karl Rahner Academy Cologne eV" in 2009 due to the shift in focus to the tasks of the Karl Rahner Academy. Its leader was the theologian Bernd Wacker until his retirement in 2018. On September 1, 2018 , Norbert Bauer, the theologian and pastoral officer of the Cologne parish of St. Gereon , took over the management of the academy.

In 2019, Werner Höbsch, who holds a doctorate in theology, was unanimously elected chairman of the sponsoring association of the Karl Rahner Academy at the general assembly.

history

The academy goes back to an initiative of the Jesuit P. Heinrich Ostermann SJ, who since 1947 set out to make a contribution to the spiritual reorientation by teaching the Catholic social doctrine , in 1951 in the form of a "Social Seminar of the Catholic Men's Work". Initially located in the Canisiushaus, the branch of the Cologne Jesuits, the facility has had its own “House of Encounters” in Cologne, Jabachstrasse 4–8, financed from donations since 1956.

Initially mainly entrepreneurs, middle managers, foremen, engineers and members of the public service took part in the courses, which were offered by almost all speakers on a voluntary basis. Under the leadership of Father Karl Rahner SJ and Father Otto Semmelroth SJ, the “Theological Academy at St. Peter” was founded under the sign of the Second Vatican Council . In 1969 the institution took over offers in the fields of art, literature and intellectual history from the "Albertus-Magnus-Werk", the educational institution of the Catholic Committee in the city of Cologne. From 1969 it called itself the "Academy for Adult Education Cologne in the House of Encounters". In 1988 the name was changed to "Karl Rahner Academy" in memory of the important theologian P. Karl Rahner SJ.

In 1975 the new further education law in North Rhine-Westphalia made it necessary to restructure the church's educational work. Various sponsors joined forces to form the educational institution of the Archdiocese of Cologne , to which the academy belonged as a special institute. The cooperation between the educational institute and the academy lasted until 2005, when the Archdiocese of Cologne stopped paying the academy any further subsidies in the context of its austerity measures. Since 2006, the academy has been financed exclusively from the financial and voluntary commitment of its listeners, friends and sponsors.

Support association

The Karl Rahner Academy is ideally and financially supported by the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Karl Rahner Academy eV The sponsoring association was founded in 1993 and is indispensable for securing the livelihood of the academy.
