Werner Höbsch

Werner Swen Höbsch (* 1951 ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian.

biography

Höbsch studied Catholic theology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . From 1978 to April 2017 he worked in the Archdiocese of Cologne , most recently as head of the Dialogue and Preaching department with a focus on interreligious dialogue , theology of religions, interreligious and intercultural competence . He is theoretician and practitioner of interreligious dialogue in Cologne and beyond. In 2012 he did his doctorate on the topic: Catholic Church and Buddhism in Germany at the Philosophical-Theological University of Vallendar . He became Deputy Director of the European Institute for Intercultural and Interreligious Research in Liechtenstein and Deputy Director of the Georges Anawati Foundation .

Höbsch has significantly supported and promoted the activities of interreligious dialogue in the archdiocese with Jews, Muslims and Buddhists. So he made the meeting between Pope Benedict XVI. and Muslim representatives during the World Youth Day in Cologne 2005 as well as the visit of the 17th Karmapa Orgyen Trinley Dorje to the Archdiocese of Cologne. The series "Dialogue of Religions" initiated by him in the Cologne Cathedral Forum has a long tradition . He examined the popular literary reception of Islam z. B. in the work of Karl May .

In 2019, Höbsch was unanimously elected chairman of the sponsoring association of the Karl Rahner Academy in Cologne at the general meeting.
