Scientific activity

His teaching and research activities focus on family sociology, religious sociology, organizational sociology, youth sociology, youth social work, the history of social work, and social ethics. He represents an empirical sociology that is linked to understanding sociology. That is why he takes into account social history, social philosophy, especially social ethics and social geography for his sociological research, and uses sociology for practical implementation in social policy and social work, especially in youth social work. His theoretical approach "enables access to the basic concept of meaning, which means the order form of human experience processing" (Internationales Soziologenlexikon, vol. 2, p. 350).

1968–1977 Hermanns was a member of the reform-oriented Bensberger Kreis , and during this time he worked on the memorandum Democratization of the Church , but on the publication Anti-Socialism from Tradition? (1977) he refused to give his consent. From 1976 to 1979 he scientifically accompanied a model project to remedy youth unemployment and to support socially disadvantaged and individually handicapped young people in Hamburg (see: Action research on Youth professional assistance, measures, results, perspectives, 1981). In 1986 he created an expertise for the 7th youth report (funded by the Federal Ministry for Youth, Family, Women and Health) entitled Family and Educational Models in Public and Youth Welfare since the Early Sixties , published in Volume 3 of the “Materials for Seventh youth report: family models in transition ”. 1989–91 he was a consultant for social sciences in the presidium of the university teachers' association at federal level. Hermanns was co-editor of the Yearbook for Youth Social Work , Vol. XII - Vol. XIX, 1991–98 , in which he also published several articles on sociology, social ethics and youth social work. From 1984-1991 he was an expert in youth welfare and youth social work on the youth committee of the city of Buchholz.

After his retirement in 2000, he mainly devoted himself to the history of social ethics and Christian social doctrine and, based on archive research based on critical sources, presented the life's works of social ethicists and social reformers Franz Wärme , Heinrich Weber , Joseph Höffner , Wilhelm Weber, and Franz Furger in several publications and categorized them historically.

From 1996 to 2000 he was a member of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) and previously a member of the “Social Work and Caritas” commission at the ZdK. With his collaboration, the ZdK documentation “Barmherzigkeit. A new perspective on a forgotten aspect of diakonia ”.
