The St. Petrus Church is the Catholic church in Buchholz in the Nordheide , a town in the Harburg district in Lower Saxony . The parish of the same name belongs to the Lower Elbe deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. Simon Peter is located at Lüneburger Straße 23.

history

With the introduction of the Reformation , the inhabitants of Buchholz, which had previously belonged to the Diocese of Verden , became Evangelical Lutheran. It was not until the second half of the 19th century, as a result of the construction of the Hamburg – Bremen and Buchholz – Lüneburg railways, that Catholics resettled in Buchholz. Starting from 1923, the part of the found occasionally, from 1934 regularly Harburg parish of St. Mary Catholic services in Buchholz instead, first in a classroom of elementary school.

On September 1, 1963 the church was consecrated anew . On October 1, 1965, the parish was elevated to a parish.

From 1993 and 1995, the parish of St. Petrus formed a pastoral care unit with the two parishes of the Holy Heart of Jesus in Tostedt and St. Maria Assumpta in Egestorf .

In 2001, the St. Petrus daycare center was opened on Steinstrasse , and in 2004 it moved to a new building behind the church (Hermann-Burgdorf-Strasse 58).

Since August 1, 2004, the parish has belonged to the Lower Elbe dean's office, which was newly founded at the time. Since November 1, 2014, the parish of St. Petrus has also included the churches of St. Maria Assumpta in Egestorf and Hl. Herz Jesu in Tostedt.

In 2017 the church was extensively refurbished; in addition to new benches, a meeting room was added.

Architecture and equipment

The church, which is almost 71 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by the architect Sonnen (Paderborn), and the architect Pauen (Hamburg) added it. Today's altar from 1976 was designed by Claus Kilian and consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen , it contains relics of the holy martyrs Vincentius and Jucundina. The interior of the church includes statues of Saints Anthony of Padua , Joseph of Nazareth and Mary . The organ was installed in 1966; it previously belonged to the Protestant Reformed community of Hamburg-Altona. The three bells installed in 1952 come from Silesia , whereby in 1996 one of the bells was replaced by a newly cast bell due to a crack.
