Léon-Étienne Duval
Léon-Étienne Cardinal Duval (born November 9, 1903 in Chênex , Haute-Savoie , France ; † May 30, 1996 in Algiers , Algeria ) was Archbishop of Algiers .
Life
Léon-Etienne Duval studied in Annecy and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He received the sacrament of ordination on December 18, 1926 and became parish priest of the diocese of Annecy and lecturer at the diocese's seminary . From 1942 to 1946 he headed the administration of the Archdiocese of Algiers as Vicar General .
On November 8, 1946, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Constantine . He was ordained episcopate on February 11th of the following year by the Bishop of Annecy, Auguste Cesbron . Co -consecrators were the Bishop of Chartres , Raoul-Octove-Marie-Jean Harscouët , and the Bishop of Bayonne , Léon-Albert Terrier .
Pope Pius XII appointed him on February 3, 1954 Archbishop of Algiers. Léon-Etienne Duval participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . From 1963 to 1988 he headed the North African Bishops' Conference (CERNA) .
On February 22, 1965, Pope Paul VI took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Balbina in the college of cardinals . Léon-Etienne Duval resigned from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Algiers on April 19, 1988 for reasons of age. He died on May 30, 1996 in Algiers and was buried in the local cathedral .
The Archbishop of Rouen , Joseph Duval , was his nephew.
