Michael Fitzgerald (clergyman)
Michael Louis Cardinal Fitzgerald MAfr (born August 17, 1937 in Walsall , Great Britain ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman , Archbishop emeritus and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
Michael Fitzgerald joined the religious order of the Society of Missionaries of Africa known as the "White Fathers". After his theological training, he was ordained a priest on February 3, 1961 . After a doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1961/65), he studied Arabic at the University of London (1965/68).
From 1968 to 1978 he taught at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) in Rome and from 1969 to 1978 at Makerere University in Kampala , Uganda . From 1972 to 1978 he was Rector of PISAI in Rome. In 1978 he moved to Halfa el Jadida in Kassala , a federal state in eastern Sudan , as a pastor . In 1980 he worked in the General Curia of the «White Fathers». In 1987 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as secretary in the Secretariat for the Unbelievers, later the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .
On December 16, 1991, Michael Fitzgerald was appointed titular bishop of Nepte by Pope John Paul II . The Pope donated his episcopal ordination on January 6, 1992 in St. Peter's Basilica . Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re and Josip Uhač .
For more than ten years he held the office of secretary in the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, until he was appointed titular archbishop on October 1, 2002 and, as successor to Cardinal Francis Arinze , appointed president of the council. On February 15, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Apostolic Nuncio in Egypt and permanent observer of the Arab League .
On October 23, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. He has lived at St. Anne's Church in Jerusalem since 2012
On September 1, 2019, Pope Francis announced that he would be accepted into the college of cardinals as an honorary cardinal deacon in the consistory of October 5, 2019 . Because he has exceeded the age limit, he is not entitled to vote in a conclave . At the creation of the cardinal, the Pope assigned him the title diaconia Santa Maria in Campitelli on October 5, 2019 . The occupation of his title diakonia took place on February 1, 2020.
