The University of Angers ( French : Université d'Angers) is a state university re-established in 1971 in the French city of Angers . It has over 17,000 students and around 2,000 academic staff. The president of the university is Daniel Martina .

history

The university has a predecessor institution that evolved from the Angers schools that formed in the 14th century , in particular a law school. In 1337 it took the name University. In 1364 she received the same privileges from King Charles V that had been granted to the University of Orléans . It was the 5th university in France, after the Sorbonne in Paris , Orléans , Toulouse and Montpellier . In 1432 the artist faculty , which laid the foundations for the higher faculties, as well as the medical and theological faculties, was established. A year later it was officially recognized by Pope Eugene IV . Towards the end of the 15th century, about 1,000 students attended the university. With the French Revolution in 1793 all universities were closed and some were converted into central schools. After a law in 1875 allowed private universities, a Catholic University of Angers was gradually established until 1879. It was one of five Catholic universities and was called Université Catholique de l'Ouest .

The state university was not re-established until 1971. It emerged from some independent predecessor institutions, the first of which, a university science center, was founded in 1958.
