The University of La Rochelle ( French Université de La Rochelle ) was opened in 1993. The campus is located in a new La Rochelles district between Ville en Bois and Minimes . During the La Rochelle summit in 1992 , the French President François Mitterrand and the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl laid the “foundation stone” for the university.

Originally it was only intended to be an offshoot of the Université de Poitiers . However, local politicians, especially the mayor Michel Crépeau, exerted pressure to create an independent university.

About 6,000 students are enrolled. There are five disciplines:

  • Law ( Droit ),
  • Environment and Coastal Areas ( Environnement et Espaces Littoraux ),
  • Economy ( gestion ),
  • Humanities ( Lettres, Langues, Arts et sciences humaines ),
  • Natural sciences ( Sciences et Technologie ).

The newly established educational institution is located near three major French universities - Nantes , Bordeaux and Poitiers (each around 150-180 km away). There was therefore a certain need for the University of La Rochelle to develop its own profile. There are many teaching and research topics related to the sea:

  • Corrosion, especially corrosion in the port area (physics / chemistry),
  • Marine biology ,
  • Coastal region (geography / geophysics).

In addition, a joint investigation center ( center commun d'analysis - CCA) was set up for the use of expensive equipment ( electron microscope , magnetic resonance tomograph, mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma, etc.).
