The École nationale des ponts et chaussées ( ENPC , German  National School for Bridges and Roads , often simply called École des ponts ) is one of the French Grandes Écoles for the building industry . Since 2008, she has been a founding member of the ParisTech association under the name École des Ponts ParisTech . It belongs to the IDEA League of the five leading technical universities in Europe.

education

The traditional core competencies of the university are civil engineering , environment, transport , urban and regional planning , mechanics , industrial management and logistics . The ENPC offers training in many areas, ranging from applied mathematics to economics and management .

The following training courses are offered:

• Engineering training : It leads to an engineering degree from the ENPC or a state master's degree
• Doctorates as Docteur des Ponts
• Professional training for post-graduate students : Mastères spécialisés (MS) and MBA
• Doctorates to the Executive Doctor of Business Administration .

ENPC is also an application-oriented school of the École polytechnique and trains for the Corps des ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées .

It publishes the Annales des ponts et chaussées through the Commission des Annales founded in 1831 .

entry requirements

Like all French Grandes Écoles , the École des ponts sees itself as an elite university in France. The general French university entrance qualification, the “bac” (Abitur), is not sufficient as an entry requirement . An entrance examination must be passed, for which interested parties attend so-called Classes préparatoires (prépas) for two years after graduating from high school. If you do not get a place in the very strict selection process ( Concours ), you can enroll at a normal university and usually start there in the third year of study.

For degree programs aimed at post-graduate students, there are some additional requirements. Executive courses leading to an Executive MBA or Executive DBA usually require several years of management experience in companies.

history

Jean-Baptiste Colbert had created the position of the state Commissaire des ponts et chaussées (about: Commissioner for bridge and road construction) under King Louis XIV in 1669 . 1716 was under Louis XV. the corps des ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées (e.g. civil service of bridge and road construction engineers ) was established. On February 14, 1747 has been École royale des ponts et chaussées established by a decision of the king as the world's first engineering school and secured the Corps of Bridges, Waters and Forests , the training of young people. In 1775 it changed its name to École nationale des ponts et chaussées , which it officially bears to this day. Its first director was Jean-Rodolphe Perronet (until 1794). Initially the school had around 50 students, but not a single teacher. The students taught themselves among themselves and gained practical experience on long visits to construction sites. It was not until the following decades that teaching was formalized through curricula and the appointment of professors.

Hotel de Fleury in Paris

It has been located in the Cité Descartes in Champs-sur-Marne , a suburb of Paris around 22 kilometers east of the center , since 1997 . Some of the associations belonging to it remained in the 6th arrondissement of Paris . The Hôtel de Fleury of the École nationale des ponts et chaussées was included in the list of historical milestones in civil engineering by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1988.

École des ponts - main building

The business school for the economics courses is located in the center of Paris with an executive campus.

The main building of the university is built in the style of a bridge without any columns.

D-School of the École des Ponts in Paris

A separate D-School teaches students the design thinking approach. The building was constructed taking into account various ecological criteria.
