The University of Toulouse I (French Université Toulouse 1 Sciences Sociales , abbr. UT1) is one of the three universities in the French city of Toulouse . It is also called L'Arsenal after its main campus . It goes back to the law faculty founded by Louis the Saint in 1229 . Today it offers courses in law, economics and administration. The college has more than 17,000 students in Toulouse and its branches in Montauban and Rodez .

History of the university

The academy which founded the university was founded by Raimund VII of Toulouse on the basis of the Paris Treaty of April 12, 1229. The foundation was given to him by Louis IX. imposed by France as a result of the defeat in the Albigensian Crusade . It originally comprised four faculties: the theological faculty, the faculty of canon law, the civil law faculty and the faculty of arts. In 1257 the medical faculty was founded.

In the course of the French Revolution, the university was closed in 1793. At the end of the Second Empire, which was marked by a generally poor situation for French universities outside the capital, Toulouse had four faculties: law, humanities, natural sciences and Catholic theology. As under the Ancien Régime , the law faculty is the most important: it houses three quarters of the students and has the most prestigious professors.

The situation of the university did not improve until the 1880s, under the influence of men like Louis Liard and Ernest Lavisse, who gave universities a greater degree of autonomy. The policy of centralization continued to hinder the development of the university until the 1960s.

On November 12, 1968, the law on the orientation of higher education came into force, which created institutions of one type, the so-called “Public institutions of a cultural and scientific nature” (établissements publics à caractère scientifique et culturel - EPCSC). The old faculties are disappearing and are being replaced by “teaching and research units” (Unités d'enseignement et de recherche - UER), which are being reorganized in universities. In this way, three new universities will be created in Toulouse, University of Toulouse I, University of Toulouse II , University of Toulouse III and the Institut national polytechnique de Toulouse (INPT).

The University of Toulouse I will remain in the center of Toulouse, while the other two universities will be located in the suburbs of the city.

Locations

The University of Toulouse I (UT 1) is spread over three locations in the heart of downtown Toulouse.

The "Anciennes Facultés" (old faculties) house the "Institut d'Administration des Entreprises" (IAE, Institute for Business Administration ), the "Service Universitaire d'Information et d'Orientation" (SUIO, University Information and Orientation Service), numerous student associations and several lecture halls. The “Anciennes Facultés” are located at 2 rue Albert Lautmann, two minutes from the Capitol Square (place du Capitole).

“L'Arsenal” (the arsenal) comprises most of the lecture halls and classrooms as well as the “Bibliothèque universitaire de l'Arsenal” (University Library of the Arsenal), which is the university's largest library. "L'Arsenal" is located at 2 rue du Doyen Gabriel Marty, opposite the "Anciennes Facultés".

The “Manufacture des Tabacs” (tobacco factory) is the location of classrooms, lecture halls and, above all, laboratories and research libraries. The "Manufacture" has the address Allée de Brienne No. 21 and is located on the other side of the Canal de Brienne when viewed from the two locations just mentioned .

Finally, there is an annex institute to the university in Albi .

Sub-areas of the university

The law faculty from 1229 is one of the oldest university institutions in Europe. During the 20th century, new faculties and institutes were created within the university, some of which formed the University of Toulouse I after May 1968.
