The University of Avignon (officially French : Université d'Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse ) is a public university in the city of Avignon in southern France . Their locations are in the Vaucluse department .
history
It was founded in 1303 to compete with the Sorbonne in Paris , which had been founded 50 years earlier . It experienced its heyday during the Avignon papacy , in the 14th and early 15th centuries. In 1793, like all other universities in France, it was dissolved in the course of the French Revolution . In 1963 and 1964, a natural science and a literary department were opened in Avignon, which were subordinate to the natural sciences and the philosophical faculties of the University of Aix-Marseille until the University of Avignon was given the status of an independent university in 1984.
