The beginnings of the university in Angers can be traced back to the cathedral school there. In the early 11th century it became known under the direction of the Bishop of Rennes - later Bishop of Angers. It was enlarged in 1229 and received a large influx of English students who had previously studied at the University of Paris , as this university was directly subordinate to the French king . The University of Angers became a center of law and especially civil law ; in 1337 it was the first university to be assigned to an episcopate and received teaching permission from the Holy See , the first university statutes also date from this time . In 1364 she received the same privileges from King Charles V that had been granted to the University of Orléans . With a royal decree of 1432, the university received approval to set up additional faculties: theology , medicine , art, and canon law and civil law. Until the French Revolution (1789) the university was able to develop into a recognized teaching institution, but teaching was prohibited between the years 1791 to 1793.

New beginning

Only in 1875 with the law to create private universities and the requirement to run at least three faculties , the Catholic university received its teaching license back. Thereupon the French bishops decided to establish five Catholic universities in France and teaching was resumed at the existing university in Angers. The university was now, since it was responsible for the western part of France, renamed the "Facultés Catholiques de l 'Ouest". In the years that followed, the Faculties of Law (1875), Literature (1876), Natural Sciences (1877) and Theology (1879) were established. The first foreign students were admitted in 1947.

Several institutes were founded by 1966 and the Catholic University began, due to the increasing number of students, with the relocation of its colleges and institutes , after some troubled years of reorganization and reorganization, what it is now called "Université Catholique l 'Ouest ( UCO) ”has been relocated to three major university areas: UCO headquarters in Angers, UCO Bretagne North in Guingamp and UCO Bretagne South in Vannes / Arradon.
