The University of Rennes 1 ( French : Université de Rennes 1 ) is a state university founded in 1969 in the French city of Rennes in the Ille-et-Vilaine department . It is one of two universities in Rennes with around 23,000 students and around 1,600 academic staff. The president of the university is Professor Guy Cathelineau.
history
The history of the university goes back to 1461, when Francis II , Duke of Brittany founded a university in Nantes . Later, parts of this university moved to Rennes. During the higher education reform in 1968, this university was split into the universities of Rennes 1 and Rennes 2 .
Facilities
The university is oriented towards the natural sciences and is divided into teaching and research units (French: Unités de Recherche et de Formation) with nine faculties, seven institutes and an engineering school (École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences Appliquées et de Technologie).
