The University of Upper Alsace (French: Université de Haute-Alsace ) with two locations in Mulhouse and Colmar is a French university . It is the largest academic institution in the Haut-Rhin department .

history

The University of Upper Alsace was only founded in 1975, but goes back to older Mülhausen universities, including today's École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Mulhouse (ENSCMu), which was created in 1822 and is the oldest chemistry university in France.

Like the ENSCMu, the École de Filature et de Tissage Mécanique , today's ENSITM, was founded 19 years later by industrialists from Mülhausen. In 1958 and 1963, two branch offices of the University of Strasbourg were established in Mulhouse and in 1969 an Institute Universitaire de Technologie (IUT) opened its doors in Mulhouse and Colmar. All of these higher education institutions were finally brought together in 1975 in the newly founded University of the Upper Rhine ( Université du Haut-Rhin ), which two years later was renamed the University of Upper Alsace.

In 1986 a faculty for economics, social sciences and law was added, and in 1990 the École Supérieure des Sciences Appliquées pour l'Ingénieur de Mulhouse (ESSAIM).

Today the university has around 8000 students, 6500 of them on the Mülhausen campus and 1500 in Colmar. It consists of 11 sub-institutions, including 4 faculties, 3 engineering schools and 2 IUTs.

There are 2 trinational courses in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Lörrach (DHBW) and the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences . These are Mechatronics Trinational and International Business Management Trinational. The events take place at the network's locations in German, English and French. In addition, the cross-border bilingual course Regio Informatica has existed together with the DHBW since 2016 .

Locations

Illberg campus

This campus is located on the so-called Illberg, named after the Ill , the river that flows through the entire Alsace region and gave it its name. The Alsace region is named after the Alemannic Alsace, which means something like Land of the Ill. The site is in the Haut-Poirier district.

Historically, this campus is the first in Mulhouse, and at the same time the most extensive. You can see the entire city from the campus. The location houses the headquarters of the University of Upper Alsace. There are also the École Nationale Supérieure des Ingénieurs Sud Alsace, the École Nationale Supérieure de chimie de Mulhouse and the faculties of natural sciences and humanities.

Grillenbreit campus

The location is on the former premises of the Berglass-Kiener factory. It comprises two Units de Formation et de Recherche, the UFR PEPS and the Institut Universitaire et Technique de Colmar. There is also a library and a cafeteria there.

Fonderie campus

The Fonderie (German foundry ) is the former industrial district of Mulhouse east of the main train station and the city center. The name comes from the branch of the industrialist André Koechlin from 1826, the founder of the Société André Koechlin et Compagnie (predecessor of SACM and Alstom ). The impressive main building, nicknamed "The Cathedral", has been renovated and now houses the Faculty of Economics, Social Sciences and Law. The renovation went hand in hand with the construction of new student apartments. The inauguration took place on September 6, 2007 by Nicolas Sarkozy and Valérie Pécresse .
