Eucor - The European Campus is a trinational network between five universities in the Upper Rhine region , in the heart of Europe. The following universities belong to the association:

Eucor - The European Campus is characterized by the geographical proximity of the member universities, the flexible mobility programs for students and the possibility of a cross-border doctorate.

history

The emergence of Eucor was promoted by a context shaped by the Franco-German partnership, increased regional cooperation and the idea of European cooperation.

The relationships between the universities on the Upper Rhine were given solid structures in 1984 with the establishment of a conference of the rectors and presidents of seven universities in Germany, France and Switzerland.

In a joint declaration in 1987, the rectors and presidents affirmed their intention to promote cross-border cooperation in all areas of teaching and research. On October 19, 1989, the conference finally passed an agreement on the establishment of a cross-border special-purpose association under the name of the European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (Eucor).

Eucor's founding agreement was signed on December 13, 1989 in Basel by the rectors and presidents of the following seven universities: Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Universität Basel, Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg I), Université des Sciences Humaines (Strasbourg II), Université Robert Schuman (Strasbourg III), University Fridericiana Karlsruhe (TH), Université de Haute-Alsace, Mulhouse.

On the occasion of Eucor's 20th anniversary in 2009, the partner universities signed a joint declaration on cooperation in doctoral training. In the years that followed, the five universities developed a joint strategy to network research and teaching more closely.

Only four years later, the Eucor presidents decided on a joint research strategy and the establishment of a European campus, for which they received political backing. On December 9, 2015 the time had come: the Eucor Presidium signed the founding documents for the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Eucor - The European Campus, which was officially opened on May 11, 2016 in Strasbourg. Carlos Moedas, the EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, gave the keynote address on the occasion. The establishment of the EGTC created its own legal personality, which enables the universities to act together under the name "Eucor - The European Campus", but to maintain their autonomy. As the first EGTC supported solely by universities, Eucor - The European Campus is a model project and unique in the European research area.

With the support of the European Regional Development Fund, the partners were able to network with one another even better: From 2016 to 2019, the EU funded the project "Eucor - The European Campus: Cross-Border Structures" in the Interreg program.

As an important result of this project, the partner universities adopted a joint strategic plan for the years 2019 to 2023 in February 2019. In it they concretise their vision and the further development of the network with projects, goals and measures in the areas of research and innovation, teaching and doctoral qualification for the coming years.

aims

The bundling of the competencies of the five universities creates a unique study and research location that creates added value for everyone involved. Cross-border collaboration and access to courses and research infrastructures at five universities in three countries should become an everyday experience for students and researchers alike.

In the long term, the Eucor - The European Campus location is to be built into a clearly profiled and attractive science and research area without walls and borders with international appeal, which is linked to other metropolitan regions such as B. Paris or Munich is comparable.

The strategic plan 2019-2023 also results in the following goals in particular:

  • Expansion of research collaborations in the priority areas of Quantum Sciences and Technology, Personalized Health - Precision Medicine, Sustainability and European Identities
  • Development of a common research infrastructure
  • Alignment of semester times
  • Joint semester ticket
  • Networking of the administrative units

organization

Eucor - The European Campus has had its own legal personality as an EGTC since 2015. The assembly, the decision-making body of Eucor, in which all presidents and rectors of the member universities are represented, elects the Eucor president and his representative from among its own ranks and adopts the annual budget.

The Vice-Presidents Committee advises the President on all questions.

Furthermore, the respective Vice Rectors meet regularly in the Policy Group Teaching and the Policy Group Research for advice.

The seat of the Eucor office is in Freiburg and the seat of the coordination office in Strasbourg. Decentralized coordinators at each member university support the coordination office in implementing its goals and are direct contacts at the universities.

Education

Promoting student mobility is one of Eucor's main concerns. Enrollment at a Eucor University opens up various forms of mobility:

Integrated mobility

This form of mobility is already firmly integrated into the course. These are joint courses of study that provide for fixed periods abroad at a Eucor University, and in some cases end with a double or triple diploma.

Free mobility

Attending individual courses at another member university is also possible, as is staying for an entire semester.

Eucor promotes student mobility with travel allowances.

Important projects

QUSTEC

Quantum Science and Technologies at the European Campus (QUSTEC) is an international doctoral program between the Universities of Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the research department of the IT group IBM in Zurich. The European Union is co-financing this project in the amount of 4.2 million euros.

Seed Money

Seed Money offers start-up funding for innovative, cross-border projects that help network scientists and teachers.

Research projects

Within the framework of Eucor, existing scientific collaborations were created or consolidated, whereby in many projects the object of investigation is directly related to the region.
