The library of the University and the Industrial Association of Mulhouse (BUSIM) is a library belonging to the university library of the Université de Haute-Alsace . It is located on the Fonderie campus in Mulhouse .

Origin and structure

The library of the Mulhouse Industrial Association (SIM) has been built since its foundation on December 24, 1825. This is the express wish of the SIM founders. Indeed, Article 4 of the Constitution provided for a library "as complete as possible, with all the classical works on mechanics, chemistry and other related sciences".

Likewise, Article 2 provides for “a library and reading room to be set up on the premises of the association for reading the best works and French and foreign newspapers on art and science, as well as collections of models, plans and hand-made products”.

The various bodies of the SIM, first chemistry and mechanics, then trade, art and natural history, gradually built up the library holdings and enriched them with purchases that were carefully checked by the librarian . Later media were added through the non-profit bodies of the paper industry, history and statistics and a section photography.

The exchange of the SIM news paper for other publications and very different donations allowed the stock to grow. Joseph Kœchlin-Schlumberger, SIM's first librarian, a geologist , bequeathed his research library of around 400 documents. Ferdinand Heilmann donated a collection of engravings from the East Indies . The legacy of documents on Alsace can also be mentioned, which counted around 4,500 titles when the Mulhouse magistrate Armand Weiss died in 1892. In the beginning, this library was reserved for members of the SIM only. But in 1920, almost a century after it was founded, it was opened to college teachers and students, and in 1945 to the general public as well.

In 1986, an agreement between SIM and the Université de Haute-Alsace enabled the establishment of the “Bibliothèque de l'université et de la Société industrial de Mulhouse (BUSIM)”.
