history

The university was founded on the initiative of lay Catholics in 1875 and inaugurated in 1877. This was only made possible by the law on the freedom of higher education of July 12, 1875, as a result of which the four other Catholic higher education institutions in France were created.

The traditional campus near Place Bellecour was expanded in 2005 by a further campus on Place Carnot.
