Jean Clément Marie Gérard Joseph Françoise Georges Laffitte Comm. l'Emm. (Born May 5, 1952 in Oloron-Sainte-Marie , Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques , France ) is a French clergyman and Curia Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Jean Laffitte attended the University of Toulouse I and obtained a diploma in political science in 1973 . He completed some courses at the University of Cambridge in 1979 and at the University of Salamanca in 1980 . In 1984 Laffitte entered the French Pontifical Seminary in Rome . He studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University . Jean Laffitte obtained a Baccalauréat in Catholic Theology and Philosophy in 1988 . On July 2, 1989, he received the sacrament of ordination . Jean Laffitte was incardinated in the diocese of Autun as a member of the Emmanuel Community , of which his sister Martine Catta is co-founder .

Laffitte continued his studies at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family . He has been in professional moral theology doctorate . In 1994 Jean Laffitte became a lecturer in marital ethics , anthropology and spirituality at the Pontifical Institute “John Paul II” for studies on marriage and the family. From 1999 to 2001 he was also Vice Rector of this institute. Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on January 14, 2000 . In 2003 Laffitte became a consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . On January 28, 2005, John Paul II appointed him Undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family . On January 24, 2006, Jean Laffitte was appointed Vice-President of the Pontifical Academy for Life .

On October 22, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the titular bishop of Entrevaux and ordered him to secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family. He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB on December 12th of the same year in St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were the President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace , Renato Raffaele Cardinal Martino , and the Archbishop of L'Aquila , Giuseppe Molinari . On January 5, 2011 Benedict XVI appointed him. as Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care .

On July 4, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him to succeed Angelo Acerbis as prelate of the Order of Malta .

His activity as secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family ended with its dissolution on September 1, 2016.
