The prelate of the Order of Malta is the ecclesiastical superior of the clergy of the Order of Malta with regard to their priestly function.

tasks

As the ecclesiastical superior of the religious clergy, the prelate watches over the development of the spiritual and priestly life and apostolate of the religious chaplains in the discipline and spirit of the order.

The prelate supports the Grand Master and the Grand Commander in their care for the spiritual life and religious observance of the members of the Order and for the spiritual interests of the religious works; as well as the Cardinal Patron in the performance of his duties for the Order.

The order prelate belongs to the Grand Council of State , takes part in the meetings of the government advisory council, in which questions of his area of ​​competence are dealt with and has to submit a report on the spiritual situation of the order to every ordinary general chapter .

The prelate is appointed by the Holy Father from a trio proposed by the Grand Master after the decision of the Sovereign Council . If none of the nominees finds the approval of the Pope, further candidates must be proposed.
