Angelo Acerbi (born September 23, 1925 in Sesta Godana , La Spezia province , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic Archbishop and emeritus Vatican diplomat .

Life

Acerbi was ordained a priest on March 27, 1948 . After completing his doctorate in canon law , he obtained a licentiate in theology in 1954 . He was educated at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy ("Pontificia Accademia Ecclesiastica") and called to the diplomatic service of the Holy See .

After activities in the nunciatures in Colombia , Brazil , Japan and France as well as in the department for interstate relations of the Vatican State Secretariat , he was on June 22, 1974 by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Zella and Pro-Nuncio in New Zealand and Oceania ; the episcopal ordination he donated it on 30 June 1974th

On August 14, 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed him apostolic nuncio in Colombia , on March 28, 1990, nuncio in Hungary , on January 13, 1994, nuncio in the Republic of Moldova and from February 8, 1997 until his resignation to Nuncio in the Netherlands . On February 27, 2001, John Paul II accepted Angelo Acerbis' resignation from the diplomatic service of the Holy See on grounds of age, and on June 21, 2001 appointed him Prelate of the Order of Malta . Acerbi is an Honorary and Devotional Grand Cross Bailli of the Order. On July 4, 2015, Jean Laffitte followed him as prelate of the Order of Malta.
