World Wrestling Championships 1998
The wrestling world championships in 1998 took place separately according to style and gender at different locations. The wrestlers were each divided into eight weight classes, while the women competed in six weight classes.
Greco-Roman
The Greco-Roman style competitions took place from August 27th to 30th, 1998 in Gävle . Three German wrestlers came in the top ten in their weight classes: Oleg Kutscherenko was the best German wrestler with 6th place in the -54 kg weight class, Thomas Zander was eighth in the -85 kg weight class and Adam Juretzko was 10th in the -69 kg weight class .

Freestyle
The free style competitions took place from September 7-10, 1998 in Tehran . In addition to the bronze medalist Alexander Leipold , three other German wrestlers were among the top ten in their weight classes: Heiko Balz in the -97 kg weight class and Vasili Zeiher in the -54 kg weight class came in seventh, Sven Thiele was placed in the -130 kg weight class 9th place.

Women
The women's competitions took place in Poznan from October 8-10, 1998 . In addition to the silver medalist Stéphanie Groß , three other German women wrestlers made it into the top ten: Nina Englich finished fourth in the -75 kg weight class, Tanja Sauter came seventh in the -51 kg weight class and Anita Schätzle was ranked 8th in the -62 weight class kg. Next to Nikola Hartmann-Dünser, the best Austrians were the two sixth placed Nina Strasser in the -68 kg weight class and Elvira Barriga in the -75 kg weight class.
