Harun Dogan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harun Doğan (* 1976 in Kahramanmaraş ) is a former Turkish wrestler . He was the 1999 world and European bantamweight free style champion.

Career

Harun Doğan began wrestling as a teenager in 1986. He belonged to the Halen Belediyesi Gebze sports club and was coached first by Mohames Oruç and then by Avni Tarhani, one of the best Turkish coaches. As an adult, the 1.65 meter tall athlete always started in bantam weight (up to 57 or 58 kg body weight), for which he had to train up to 7 kg before each competition. He wrestled exclusively in free style .

He was already very successful on the international wrestling mat as a junior. In 1990 he became Junior European Champion in Szombathely (Cadets = age group up to the age of 16) in the weight class up to 43 kg and in 1991 in Alma, Canada , Junior World Champion (Cadets) in the weight class up to 47 kg. In 1992 in Cali , Colombia , he was runner-up in the junior world champion in the weight class up to 50 kg (juniors = age group up to the age of 18) and in 1994 in Kourtane / Finland in bantamweight he was again runner-up in the junior European champion (espoirs = age group up to the age of 20).

In the senior class he started in 1995 with a 5th place at the European Championship in Friborg, Switzerland . At the world championship of the same year in Atlanta he improved further and won there in bantamweight behind Terry Brands from the United States a. Guivi Sissaouri from Canada the world championship bronze medal . At the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 , he lost after four wins in the final against Serafim Barzakow from Bulgaria and was thus runner-up European champion. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he lost in the first round against the North Korean Ri Yong Sam on points. Then he started a winning streak and beat Talata Embalo from Guinea-Bissau, Michele Liuzzi from Italy , Arif Abdullayev from Azerbaijan , Alexander Gusow from Belarus and Šaban Trstena from Macedonia. Because of the rules in force at the time, despite these victories, he could only fight for the Olympic bronze medal. In this fight, curiously enough, he met Ri Yong Sam again and lost again on points, leaving him only the ungrateful 4th place.

In 1997, Harun Doğan achieved poor results , except for the win at the Mediterranean Games in Bari . At the European Championships this year in Warsaw he lost to Musa Saidubataow from Ukraine and Murad Umakhanov from Russia after controversial fights in extra time, which meant he was eliminated and only finished in 15th place. At the World Cup in Krasnoyarsk he scored two wins, but retired after defeats against Jung Jin-Hyuk from South Korea and Arif Abdullayew, and only reached 13th place.

In 1998, after an 8th place at the European Championships in Bratislava , where he surprisingly lost to the Romanian Adrian Stratu in the 4th round, things were looking up again. The Goodwill Games in New York , he reached behind Mohammad Talaee from Iran already, he finished second place and the same place at the World Championship in Tehran , where he met with Murad Umachanow from Russia , Sanshiro Abe from Japan, Murat Mambetow from Kazakhstan and Guivi Sissaouri initially defeated four world-class athletes before facing Alireza Dabir from Iran in the final . In a balanced battle it was after the end of the extension after techn. Points 2: 2, so that the jury had to decide, which gave the local Dabir the victory. Harun Doğan was runner-up in the world championship.

1999 was Harun Doğan's most successful year. He was first in Minsk with four wins European bantamweight champion. He defeated Otar Tuschischwili from Georgia in the semifinals and Michele Liuzzi from Italy in the final . He also triumphed at the world championship this year in Ankara and won the world championship title with six wins in a superior style . In the final, he beat Alireza Dabir, his 1998 conqueror, on points.

In 2000, he concentrated on the Olympic Games in Sydney . He won there first over Octavian Cuciuc from Romania and Damir Sachartinow from Uzbekistan . He was injured in the process and was unable to compete in his next fight against Murad Ramazanow from Russia . He was eliminated and only came in 15th place. He fared even worse at the 2001 World Cup in Sofia , where he lost to Əbil İbrahimov from Azerbaijan and Hiroki Sekikawa from Japan and ended up in 30th place.

Then Harun Doğan got involved in a doping affair and was banned from 2002 to 2004. Shortly before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he was eligible to start again and started there in the bantam weight class (from 2002 up to 55 kg). However, he could not compensate for the long break in international competition in Athens, dropped out early and only reached 20th place.

He then resigned from international competitive sport.
