Amiran Karndanof ( Greek Αμιράν Καρντάνοφ , Russian Амиран Авданович Карданов Amiran Avdanowitsch Kardanow ; born August 19, 1976 in Tschikola , Irafski rajon, North Ossetian ASSR ) is a Greek wrestler . He won a bronze free style flyweight medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics .

Career

Amiran Karndanof began wrestling in 1987 as a teenager in North Ossetia (Russia). He concentrated on free style and as an adult he was 1.56 meters tall and always fought in the lightest weight class, the flyweight, and since 2002 the bantamweight. At the age of 18 he was sent by the Russian Wrestling Federation to the Junior World Championship in Budapest, where he made a successful debut at international championships. He was the same junior flyweight world champion in Budapest ahead of Bae Jin-kuk, South Korea and Reza Azimi, Iran . In 1995 he was also at the junior world championship (Espoirs = age group up to the age of 20) in Tehran , but only came in 7th place there.

In 1996 he went to Greece for economic reasons, wrestling is his job, and was immediately naturalized there. He became a member of the wrestling club WC Iraklis Piresteri and is or was trained there by Christos Alexandridis and Panagotis Koutsoupakis. He was able to compete for Greece at the 1996 European Championships in Budapest and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . But he did not get into the medal area at either event. In Budapest he came in 7th place and in Atlanta he ended up only in 16th place after defeats against Atscham Achilow from Uzbekistan and Lou Rosselli from the United States .

In 1997 he was not used at the European Championships and the World Championships. At the Mediterranean Games in Bari , he came in flyweight only on 4th place.

Amiran Karndanof took a big step forward in 1998. He won 3rd place at the European Championships in Bratislava, the first medal win at an international championship in the senior sector. On the way to the bronze medal he defeated u. a. Armen Mkrtchyan from Armenia , Namig Abdullajew from Azerbaijan and Murad Ramazanow from Russia. He was able to confirm this good result at this year's World Cup in Tehran . There he defeated Ping Huiniu from the People's Republic of China , Oleksandr Sacharuk from Ukraine , Jung Soon-woo from South Korea , Vasili Zeiher from Germany and Chechenol Mongusch from Russia. The way to the final was blocked by Samuel Henson from the United States, against whom he suffered a defeat in his second fight. He lost the fight for a world championship bronze medal against Gholamreza Mohammadi from Iran (1: 3 points).

In 1999 Amiran Karndanof could not build on the successes of 1998. He lost at the European Championships in Minsk in his first fight against Oleksandr Sacharuk and therefore only finished 11th and at the World Championships this year in Ankara he won over Vitali Railean from Moldova and Vasily Zeiher, but then lost to Gholamreza Mohammadi and therefore only reached 10th place.

Because of the poor performance at the international championships in 1999, Amiran Karndanof had to compete in four difficult Olympic qualification tournaments in the spring of 2000, in which he had to travel almost all over the world until he had to start at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney had the necessary points together. These were tournaments in Minsk (6th place), Leipzig (14th place), Tokyo (5th place) and Mexico City (6th place). Because of this grueling mode for the wrestlers, the International Wrestling Federation (FILA), a fifth tournament in which Amiran Karndanof did not take part in Alexandria , came under strong criticism and then changed this procedure. Despite these efforts, or perhaps because of them, he was in good shape at the European Championships in Budapest in 2000 and was only slightly defeated by Bulgarian Ivan Welkow Djorew with 5: 6 points in the battle for the bronze medal . At the Olympic Games he continued to improve and defeated Witali Railean, Behnan Tayebi Kermani and others. Tümendembereliin Dsüünbajan from Mongolia . In the fight for a place in the final, he lost to Namig Abdullajew, but then won the fight for an Olympic bronze medal against German Accountiev from Belarus with 5: 4 points.

In the following years Amiran Karndanof won further medals at three European championships. In 2001 he became vice-European champion in Budapest, where he was defeated in the final against Ghenadie Tulbea from Moldova with 5: 6 points. In 2003 he was again Vice European Champion in Riga . In the final in Riga he lost to his old rival Namig Abdullajew. In 2006 he finally won a bronze medal in Moscow , which he fought for with a 5-1 point win over Vladislaus Andrejew from Belarus.

He wasn't that successful at the World Championships in those years. The best result he achieved was a 6th place at the 2006 World Cup in New York . He won there u. a. about Bessarion Gotschashvili from Georgia . The Iranian Mohamad Aslani , who defeated him on points, prevented entry into the fights for medals .

The year 2004 was also a successful year for Amiran Karndanof. In that year he finished 4th at the European Championships in Ankara and also achieved this place at the Olympic Games in Athens , narrowly missing another Olympic medal. He came in Athens to three victories, but lost against the eventual Olympic champion Mawlet Batirow from Russia and in the fight for a bronze medal against Chikara Tanabe from Japan .

Amirna Karndanof's international career came to an end in 2008 when he failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. But he is still very active in the German Bundesliga. He is wrestling for KSV Aalen 05 in the 2010/11 season , after having previously competed for VfK Schifferstadt , KSV Witten 07 and 1. Luckenwalder SC .

In 2002, Amiran Karndanof in Greece was accused of having accelerated his naturalization in 1996 by submitting false documents. Obviously he was able to refute these allegations, because he also started for Greece afterwards.
