Ivan Welkow Djorew (born May 17, 1976 in Yambol ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He was multiple medalist at European championships in free style in flyweight and bantamweight .

Career

Ivan Welkow Djorew started wrestling as a teenager in 1985, focusing on free style. After the political change in Bulgaria he became a member of the wrestling club Slavia Litex Sofia , where he was trained by Miho Dukow . He later switched to Vitjas-Panew Varna . At a height of 1.63 meters, he always started as an adult in flyweight and from 2002 in bantamweight. He is well known in German wrestling circles because he has been wrestling in the German Bundesliga for many years. In the 2010/11 season he will start for SV Wacker Burghausen . Before that he also wrestled for TSV Kelheim , RSV Rotation Greiz , KSV Schorndorf and SC Anger . Wrestler is also his profession at the moment.

The international career as a wrestler began for Ivan Welkow Djorew with participation in the Junior World Championship in 1992 in Istanbul . In the cadet age group (up to the age of 16), he took 4th place in the class up to 47 kg body weight. This was the best result he achieved in an international junior championship. In 1993 he was ninth at the Junior European Championship (Juniors) in Götzis , at the Junior World Championship 1994 (Juniors) in Budapest he came in 7th place in the weight class up to 54 kg body weight and in 1995 he came in the Junior World Championship ( Espoirs) in Tehran in flyweight to 8th place.

In the case of the seniors, it was not until 2000 that he came back to an international championship. At the European Championships in Budapest, he immediately won a flyweight medal. He won over Zsolt Szatmari from Hungary, Roman Kollar from Slovakia and David Legrand from France , was defeated by Leonid Tschutschunow from Russia and won the fight for the European Championship bronze medal with 6: 5 points over the Greek Amiran Kartanow . He was not used at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

Between 2001 and 2003 he took part in several world and European championships. He could not place himself in any of these championships in the medal area. The best result he achieved at these championships was a 6th place at the 2001 European Championships in Budapest.

In 2004 he managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens at the Olympic qualification tournament in Bratislava . He finished there only 19th place. But he did far better at the European Championships this year in Ankara , because there he achieved third place with victories over Bessarion Gotschaschwili from Georgia and Alexei Kosarjew from Belarus , a defeat against Martin Berberjan from Armenia and a victory over Amiran Kartanow and win another European Championship bronze medal. Surprisingly, he was able to compete in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens because his compatriot Anatoli Guidea , who had fought for a place in the featherweight division, was unable to compete due to injury. Ivan Welkow Djorew was used for him. He was defeated in Athens by Yandro Quintana from Cuba and Sushil Kumar from India and therefore only reached 18th place.

After that he did not start at any international championships.
