Career
Sushil Kumar, who comes from a humble background, his father Diwan Singh Solanki is a bus driver, started wrestling when he was 10 years old. He was guided by his father and his Cossan Sundrap, both of whom were also wrestlers. From the age of 14 he trained in a wrestling school in the Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi.
During his career so far he has been trained by Yashvir, Ramphal, Jagminder Singh, Ravinder Mann, Satpal Padamshree and Gyan Singh. He is an employee of the Indian State Railways . Sushil Kumar concentrates on the free style, only at the Commonwealth Championships in 2005 he also started in the Greco-Roman style. At a height of 1.68 meters, he first started as an adult in featherweight (up to 60 kg body weight), since 2005 he has been wrestling in lightweight (up to 66 kg body weight).
Sushil Kumar was already extremely successful as a junior. He was in 1998 in Manchester and 1999 in Łódź each junior world champion in the age group of cadets (up to the age of 16) in the weight classes up to 45 kg and 50 kg body weight. At the Junior World Championships in 2001 in Tashkent he came in bantamweight but only on the 12th place because he had to accept a defeat by Reza Chalilow from Azerbaijan in his first fight .
In the senior class, he won the featherweight title in free style at the 2003 Commonwealth Championships in London . In the same year he came in 3rd place at the Asian Featherweight Championships in New Delhi . In 2003 he started for the first time at the World Championships for Seniors, which took place in New York . In featherweight he showed excellent performance and defeated with Aljaksandr Karnizki , Belarus , Aram Margarjan , Armenia , Kamal Ustarchanow , Russia and David Pogosjan from Georgia, four strong wrestlers from the successor states of the Soviet Union . Against Arif Abdullayev from Azerbaijan he was defeated in the semi-finals and had to admit defeat to South Korean Song Jae-myung just on points in the fight for the bronze medal , so that he landed on the ungrateful 4th place.
In 2004 Sushil Kumar started at the Olympic Games in Athens . He was defeated in his first fight against Yandro Miguel Quintana Ribalta from Cuba on points and reached, according to the rules of the time, with a victory over Iwan Welkow Djorew from Bulgaria only 14th place.
In 2005 Sushil Kumar was again the title holder in the free style at the Commonwealth Championships in Stellenbosch / South Africa and took 3rd place in the Greco-Roman style. He started in the lightweight for the first time. The Asian Championships in Wuhan in 2005 were disappointing for him , as he only finished 8th there in the lightweight category. At the 2005 World Cup, he was not at the start.
At the Asian Games in Doha in 2006 , he suffered a defeat from Takafumi Kojima from Japan , but won a bronze medal with a remarkable victory over Leonid Spiridonow from Kazakhstan . At the world championship this year in Guangzhou he reached only 13th place after a victory over the Vietnamese Nguyen Doan Dung and a defeat against Elmar Asgarow from Azerbaijan.
At the Asian championship in 2007 in Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan , Sushil Kumar won the runner-up title behind Hassan Tahmasi from Iran, but after three victories at the 2007 World Cup in Baku , Sushil Kumar did not make it into the medal ranks because he against in the 4th round Andrij Stadnik from Ukraine lost. This placed him in 7th place.
In 2008 he won a bronze medal for lightweight at the Asian Championship in Jeju, South Korea . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 he was in excellent form. Although he lost again in his first fight against Andrei Stadnik . He then fought for a bronze medal with victories over Doug Schwab from the United States, Albert Batirow from Belarus and Leonid Spiridonow . He won a medal in the wrestling competitions at the Olympic Games for India after 56 years . In 1952, Khashaba Jadhav won a bronze medal in Helsinki . Sushil Kumar received a Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for 2008.
At the 2009 World Championships in Herning / Denmark , Sushil Kumar narrowly missed a medal. After a semi-final defeat against Rasul Djukajew from Russia, he lost the battle for the bronze medal against Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu from Japan and came in 5th place.
The highlight of his career was the 2010 World Cup in Moscow , after he had become Asian champion in the senior lightweight category for the first time in New Delhi in front of the South Korean Kim Dae-sung , Ichtijor Nawrusow, Uzbekistan and Pürewdschawyn Önörbat , Mongolia . In Moscow, Sushil Kumar Akritidis defeated Anastasios from Greece , Martin Daum from Germany , Bujandschawyn Batdsorig from Mongolia, Jabrail Hasanow from Azerbaijan and in the final battle in front of a fanatical audience also the Russian Alan Gogajew and thus became world champion . This makes him the first Indian to win a world title among senior wrestlers.
In 2011 he was injured for a long time, but still started, hardly recovered, at the World Cup in Istanbul . He came there but only to a victory over Joseph Lopez from Guatemala and retired after a defeat in the next fight against Andrei Stadnik from Ukraine. He only finished 14th. Back in shape, he narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in London in March 2012 with a 3rd place at a tournament in Astana . He finally achieved this in April 2012 at a tournament in Taiyuan, China . He won there ahead of Otar Tuschischwili from Georgia and Andrij Kwjatkowskyj from Ukraine. At the Olympic Games itself he came in his first fight to a narrow point victory (2: 1 rounds, 2: 2 points) over the Olympic champion of 2008 Ramazan Şahin from Turkey. Then he defeated Ichtiyor Nawrusow from Uzbekistan and Aqschürek Tanatarow from Kazakhstan in a tough battle . He was in the final, in which he had no chance against Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu from Japan (0: 2 rounds, 1: 4 points). But winning the silver medal was a great success for him.
Sushil Kumar was the flag bearer of the Indian delegation at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London .
