René Montero Rosales (born November 23, 1979 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban wrestler . He became the 2002 free style bantamweight world champion .

Career

René Montero started wrestling as a teenager in 1992. He concentrated on the free style. He was a member of the sports club CEAR Havana and was mainly trained by Filiberto Delgado. At a height of 1.65 meters, he started first in flyweight and then in bantamweight.

At his first start at an international championship in 1999, he was the same junior flyweight world champion in Sydney in front of the Bulgarian Saphet Pherad and the Kazak Abil Ibragimow. His first start at an international senior championship he made in 2002 at the world championship in Tehran and there he also won and became world champion in bantamweight. On the way to this success he defeated Babak Noursad from Iran , Vasily Zeiher , Germany , Martin Berberjan , Armenia , Oleksandr Sacharuk , Ukraine and Namig Abdullajew , Azerbaijan .

In 2003 Rene Montero was defeated in the final of the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic against Stephen Abas from the United States and finished second ahead of Michail Japaridze from Canada . At the 2003 World Cup , he could not compete due to an injury.

In 2004 he won an Olympic qualification tournament in Bratislava ahead of Herman Accountiev , Russia , Martin Berberjan and Namig Abdullaev. In April 2004 he was also the Pan-American champion in Guatemala City ahead of Tom Clum, United States and Fernando Iglesias, Argentina . At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he first won the bantamweight division over Ghenadie Tulbea from Moldova , but lost in his second fight against Stephan Abas (1: 2 rounds, 3: 4 points). He was eliminated and only came in 13th place. According to the current regulations, because Abas won the silver medal, he could have continued to wrestle in the consolation round and would have had a chance of an Olympic medal.

In 2005 he took part in the World Championships in Budapest . He defeated Gotcha Kirkitadze from Georgia in his first fight there , but then lost again very narrowly against Tomohiro Matsunaga from Japan (1: 2 rounds, 8: 7 points). Since Matsunaga did not reach the final with changed regulations, he was eliminated and only came in 12th place.

In 2006 René Montero won the Central America and Caribbean Games in Cartagena / Colombia . This year he was used again at the World Championships in Guangzhou , but lost there in bantamweight to Samuel Henson from the United States and only finished 19th in the final.

After that he was no longer used at international championships by the Cuban Wrestling Association.
