Yang Kyong-il
Yang Kyong-il (born August 7, 1987 in Pyongyang , North Korea ) is a North Korean wrestler . In 2009 and 2014 he became world champion in free style in bantamweight and in the weight class up to 57 kg body weight. He also won at the Olympic Games 2012 in London a bronze medal.
Career
Yang Kyong-il started wrestling in 2004. The squat, 1.57 meter tall athlete prefers free style and competes for the Pyongyang University Sports Club . There the student is trained by Ri Yong-Nam.
In the junior sector, he could not achieve any success at international championships, which is due to the fact that North Korea did not participate in these championships. Therefore, at the age of 20, in 1987 he made his debut at one of the major international events, the World Cup in Baku . He came there in bantamweight to victories over Alexander Chawelow from Ukraine and Namig Abdullajew from Azerbaijan . After a defeat in his third fight against Andy Moreno from Cuba he was eliminated and only came in 14th place.
In 2008, Yang Kyong-il qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing with a victory at the qualifying tournament in Warsaw . In Warsaw a. a. Bessarion Gotschaschwili from Georgia , Ramil Rejepow from Turkmenistan and Petru Toarca from Romania behind them. In Beijing he lost in his first fight against Namig Sewdimow from Azerbaijan with 1: 2 rounds (3: 6 technical points). Since Sewdimow did not reach the final, Yang had to retire and ended up in 12th place.
But he managed a big surprise at the 2009 World Cup in Herning / Denmark . He won there in bantamweight over Bajaraagiin Naranbaatar from Mongolia , Krasimir Krastanow from Great Britain , Nikolai Aiwasan from Ukraine , Ryswan Hajjyeu from Belarus and Sezen Akgül from Turkey and became world champion . What was remarkable was the fact that, with the exception of the final, he led his fights with great superiority and scored high points.
It is therefore a bit surprising that he was unable to continue this winning streak at the 2010 Asian Cup in New Delhi and suffered a defeat by Shinichi Yumoto from Japan in the semifinals . That is why he only came third in New Delhi. Yang Kyong-Il was unable to defend his world title from 2009 in Moscow in 2010 because North Korea did not take part in this championship. In November 2010 he was at the Asian Games in Guangzhou at the start and came there behind Dilschod Mansurow from Uzbekistan on the 2nd place. In 2011 he was Asian champion in Tashkent ahead of Yasuhoro Inaba from Japan. At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul he was back at the start and defeated Dilschod Mansurow in his first fight. In his next fight he was defeated by Hassan Rahimi from Iran and had to retire because Rahimi did not reach the final. He only came in 17th place.
In April, Yang Kyong-il qualified for the Olympic Games in London with a tournament victory in Taiyuan / China . In London he won a victory over Dilschod Mansurow, then lost to Djamal Otarsultanow from Russia and then secured an Olympic bronze medal with victories in the consolation round over Saatele Sem Shilimela, Namibia and Daulet Nijasbekow from Kazakhstan.
In August 2013 he started at the Asian Championships in New Delhi and had to admit defeat there in the final of the bantamweight to the Indian Amit Kumar . He was nevertheless used at the World Cup in Budapest that year. He lost in Budapest in his first fight in a tough fight against the Russian Nariman Israpilow on points (0: 2 rounds, 8:12 points). Since Israpilow did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 19th place.
In February 2014 he competed in the renowned Takhti Cup in Tehran in the new weight class up to 57 kg. He took 3rd place there behind his compatriot Jin Jong-hak and Rasul Kalijew from Kazakhstan. Then Jin Jong-hak was used by the North Korean Wrestling Association in April 2014 at the Asian Championship in Almaty. This finished in this championship only 10th place. For this reason, the North Korean Wrestling Federation used Yang Kyong-il again at the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent. He fully justified this trust, because he became world champion for the second time in his career with victories over Kim Sung-gwon, South Korea, Yuki Takahashi, Japan, the defending champion Hassan Rahimi , Iran and Wladimer Khinchegashvili , Georgia.
