Karl Eikenberry
Karl Winfrid Eikenberry (* 1951 ) is an American retired Lieutenant General in the United States Army and diplomat .
He was proposed as US Ambassador to Afghanistan by US President Barack Obama and sworn in on April 29, 2009. The appointment of a former general to the sensitive post as ambassador was considered extremely unusual by the New York Times . He had served twice as a soldier in Afghanistan. In April 2011, the American government announced that it would replace him with Ryan Crocker as ambassador in Kabul .
In 2012, Eikenberry was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
