Alexis Rodríguez Valera
Alexis Rodríguez Valera (born July 7, 1978 in Havana ) is a Cuban wrestler . He became world champion in 1998 and 2000 Olympic third in super heavyweight free style.
Career
Alexis Rodríguez began wrestling as a teenager in his hometown of Havana in 1985. He concentrated on free style and belonged to the sports club Cerro Pelado Havana . His coach was Barbero Morgan from the start of his career. He is a sports teacher and always competed in the heaviest weight class, the heavy or super heavyweight.
As early as 1996 he qualified at a tournament in Cali , Colombia, for participation in the Olympic Games in Atlanta that year. He could not take part in these games because the country of Fidel Castro boycotted these Olympic Games. In the same year he was in Moscow but junior world champion in the weight class up to 115 kg body weight. In 1997 he wrestled at the World Cup in Stillwater . In the final he lost against the former Olympic champion Bruce Baumgartner from the United States. It was the only meeting of these two wrestlers. In 1997 he was also the first Pan American champion in San Juan , Puerto Rico. His victory at the Junior World Championships in 1996 he could not repeat in Helsinki in 1997, because he was defeated there in the final of this championship against Aydın Polatçı from Turkey, who should develop into his feared opponent throughout his career. After all, he also wrestled at the 1997 World Championships in Krasnoyarsk and, as a 19-year-old, immediately became vice world champion. In 2001 he was in Santo Domingo , Dom. Republic, second time Pan American champion ahead of Andrew Bowlby from the United States. He then won a medal, namely the bronze, at the World Cup in Sofia that year. He won this medal with victories over Aleksi Modebadse , Georgia, Hisham Abdelwahab Abdelmoanem Mohamed, Egypt, and Boschidar Bojadschiew , Bulgaria, a loss to Artur Taymazov and a victory over Kerry McCoy.
In the following years, Alexis Rodríguez won three vice world titles. That was in Tehran in 2002 , in Budapest in 2005 and in Baku in 2007 . He defeated Ottó Aubéli from Hungary, Dawit Otiaschwili from Georgia, Marid Mutalimow from Kazakhstan, Thomas Rowlands and, in 2007, Artur Taymazov. The wrestlers who blocked his way to the world title during these years were David Musuľbes , Russia, (2002), Aydın Polatçı (2005) and Biljal Machow , Russia, (2007). In 2004 he also competed in the Olympic Games in Athens . But he missed the medal ranks there with a 5th place. In Athens he defeated Nestoras Batzelas , Greece, and Serhij Prjadun , Ukraine, lost to Aydın Polatçı and won over Kuramagomed Kuramagomedow from Russia.
He was Pan-American champion in Guatemala City in 2004 and in San Salvador in 2007. He also won the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he defeated Thomas Rowlands in the final. For participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he could no longer qualify.
