Giorgi Gogschelidze ( Georgian გიორგი გოგშელიძე ; born November 7, 1979 in Gori ) is a Georgian wrestler who initially started for Russia and has been wrestling for Georgia since 2006. He was world champion in 2001 in light heavyweight (class up to 96 kg body weight) in free style.

Career

Giorgi Gogschelidze has been learning to wrestle in his native Georgia since 1988. He concentrated on the free style. As a junior he decided to start at international championships for Russia . He was therefore a nominal member of the Russian army, but has been a professional wrestler from the start of his career. With a height of 1.83 meters and a weight of approx. 98 kg, he can wrestle in light heavyweight without major weight problems.

He made his debut at international championships at the 1998 Junior World Championship in Las Vegas , where he won the light heavyweight division. In 1999 he was Junior European Champion in Riga and again Junior World Champion in the light heavyweight division in Sydney . He also won the 1999 military world championships in the light heavyweight division in front of Arawat Sabeev from Germany and Sergei Prjadun from Ukraine .

In 2001 he started for Russia at the European Senior Championships in Budapest . In the light heavyweight division he lost it in the final against his Georgian compatriot Eldari Luka Kurtanidze on points and took 2nd place. He achieved even greater success at the World Cup in Sofia that same year . With five wins he won the world championship title there. He defeated u. a. the strong Iranian Alireza Heidari , Wadym Tassoew from Ukraine and in the final Krassimir Kochnev from Bulgaria .

In 2002 Giorgi Gogschelidze only started at the World Championships in Tehran. After two wins, he met Eldari Luka Kurtanidze in his third fight, against whom he lost 3-1 points. That left him only in 6th place.

In 2003, 2004 and 2005 Georgi Gogschelidze could no longer qualify for the international championships in Russia. Above all, Khadzhimurad Gazalov from North Ossetia , neighboring Georgia , who also started for Russia, took these starting places away from him. However, he recorded a remarkable victory in Moscow in 2003 when he won the so-called "FILA Absolute Championships" and defeated world-class wrestlers like Alexis Rodríguez Valera from Cuba , Wadym Tassoew, Daniel Cormier from the USA and Fatih Çakıroğlu from Turkey . However, this tournament does not have the status of World Championships or even Olympic Games. In 2005 Georgi Gogschelidze also wrestled for one season in the Iranian professional league of freestyle wrestlers.

In 2006, after the resignation of Eldari Luka Kurtanidze, Giorgi Gogschelidze decided to start again for his home country Georgia , probably also to avoid Chadschimurad Gazalov in Russia. He belonged to Dinamo Tbilisi and was trained by Nugsar Schireli. With this change, there were successes again, although he lost both at the 2006 European Championships in Moscow and at the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou against Chadschimurad Gazalov. In Moscow he came in 3rd place and in Guangzhou in 2nd place.

At the European Championships in Sofia in 2007 Giorgi Gogschelidze Schirwani Muradow , a Dagestani starting for Russia, and came in 3rd place. At this year's World Cup in Baku , he suffered a surprising early defeat against the Russian Aleksei Krupnjakow , who started for Kyrgyzstan . Since Krupnjakow did not reach the final, the tournament was over for Gogschelidze after this defeat and he only finished 10th.

The 2008 Olympic year began for Giorgi Gogschelidze with a great success at the European Championships in Tampere . after three minor successes, he met in the semifinals on Chadschimurad Gazalow and defeated them with 5: 4 points. So he had reached the final, which he won with 3-0 points against Georgi Tibilow from Ukraine .
