With victories over Ottó Aubéli from Hungary and the Turkish ex-world champion Aydın Polatçı , he reached 3rd place.
At the Russian championship in June 2008 in Saint Petersburg , Akhmedov finally won the ticket to the Olympic Games in Beijing by winning the heavyweight title ahead of Aljaksej Schamarau and Bilyal Machow . There he was one of the main favorites with David Musuľbes and the American Steve Mocco , he first won the silver medal behind Artur Taymazov from Uzbekistan , who was convicted of doping in 2017. In December 2008 Bakhtiyar Akhmedov was seriously injured in a knife fight and took several years to fully recover.
