Tervel Ivaylov Dlagnev ( Bulgarian Тервел Ивайлов Длагнев Terwel Iwajlow Dlagnew ; born November 19, 1985 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is an American wrestler of Bulgarian origin.

Career

Tervel Dlagnev was born in Bulgaria and came to the United States with his parents in 1989. He attended high school in Arlington, Texas and began wrestling there in 2000. Since 2007 he has been attending the University of Nebraska in Kearney (Nebraska) . There he studies molecular biology and is trained in wrestling by Mark Manning. Now naturalized in the United States, he lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa and is a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club .

As a high school wrestler, Tervel Dlagnev was not very successful, finishing third at the Texas State Championships only once. As a wrestler at the University of Nebraska, he improved by leaps and bounds and, with a body weight of around 120 kg, grew fully into the heavyweight division. He only wrestles in free style.

In 2007 he took 1st place in the heavyweight division at the NCAA Championships of Division II, which he also secured in 2008 at these championships. In the same year he finished 4th in the USA Senior Championships behind Thomas Rowlands , Cole Konrad and Steve Mocco . In 2008 he won the USA Championship with a third place behind Thomas Rowlands and Steve Mocco, but before Tolly Thompson , a medal for the first time. That year he also took part in the so-called Olympic Trials (Olympic elimination). But there came the established Steve Mocco, Thomals Rowlands and Scott Steele only in 4th place.

In 2009 his breakthrough came on a national level. First he finished 2nd behind Steve Mocco at the USA championships and then he beat the same wrestler in the US World Championship elimination and thus got the ticket for the 2009 World Championships.

In addition to these good results on the national level, Tervel Dlagnev also showed on the international wrestling mat that he can be expected there in the future. In 2008 he was in Thessaloniki universities world champion before Riza Yildirim from Turkey and Atsushi Nakamura, Japan . In 2009 he won an international tournament in Kiev in front of the Georgian David Otiaschwili . At the "Dan Kolew" tournament in Sofia he came in second behind Boschidar Bojadschiew from Bulgaria , but ahead of Bartłomiej Bartnicki from Poland . And also at the "Takhty" Cup in Tehran he was able to convince with a 3rd place behind the two Iranians Fardin Masoumi Valadi and Mohammadreza Azarshakib. He was also able to convince at the World Championships in Herning. He defeated there Yuyyup Nunajew, Hungary, Alexei Schemarow from Belarus and Ali Isajew, Azerbaijan. In the semifinals he lost to Fardin Masoumi Vladi, but was able to secure a bronze medal in the consolation round with a victory over Alexander Modebadse from Georgia.

Since 2008 Tervel Dlagnev has held a coaching position at the University of Northern Iowa .

In 2010 Tervel Dlagnev finished both in the USA championship and in the US World Championship elimination behind Les Sigman from the Nittany Lion WC in 2nd place. He was therefore not used at the World Cup in Moscow . In Monterrey he was Pan American heavyweight champion before Jesse Ruiz Flores from Mexico and Antoine Aboujaoude, Brazil . In 2011 he became USA champion again and also won the elimination tournament for the world championship in Istanbul before Steve Mocco . At the World Cup he defeated u. a. the two-time Olympic champion Artur Taymazov from Uzbekistan. In the semifinals he was defeated by Alexei Schemarow from Belarus and finally lost in the fight for a bronze medal against Davit Modsmanashvili from Georgia, who was back after a two-year doping ban, on points.

In 2012, Tervel Dlagnev won four strong international tournaments before the Olympic Games in London and defeated such strong wrestlers as the reigning world champion Alexei Schemarov, Taha Akgül from Turkey and Komeil Ghasemi from Iran. In February 2012 he was also the Pan-American Champion in Colorado Springs ahead of Sunny Dhinsa, Canada and Disney Rodriguez from Cuba. At the Olympic Games in London he defeated Ismael El Desouky Abdelraouf from Egypt and again Alexei Schemarow, but then lost to Artur Taymazov and in the battle for a bronze medal against Komeil Ghasemi. Therefore only a fifth place remained for him.

He also took 5th place at the 2013 World Cup in Budapest. He defeated there u. a. also his feared opponent Komeil Ghasemi, but lost in the semifinals against Alen Sassejew from Ukraine and in the fight for one of the bronze medals against Taha Akgül from Turkey.

At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, he won a medal again. He won there over Alexander Romanov from Moldova and Soslan Gaglojew from Slovakia, then lost to Taha Akgül and then won over Aslan Dsebischow, Azerbaijan and the ex-world champion Alexei Schemarow from Belarus, with which he won a bronze medal.

In 2015 he was not at the start at the World Cup and therefore had to fight for a place in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in an Olympic qualification tournament. He did this in a convincing way at a tournament in Frisco. He won this tournament before Korey Jarvis from Canada. Only then did he win the US trials for the Olympic Games in front of Zachery Rey, Dominique Bradley and Nicholas Gwiazdowski and only then had his starting place in Rio de Janeiro safe. In Rio he won over Jamaladdin Magomedow and Robert Baran from Poland, but then lost to Komeil Ghasemi and Geno Petriaschwili from Georgia, a young newcomer, and only achieved the ungrateful 5th place. Then he ended his wrestling career.
