Dawit Modsmanashvili ( Georgian დავით მოძმანაშვილი, born November 9, 1986 ) is an Uzbek wrestler of Georgian origin.

Life

Modsmanashvili started wrestling as a child in 1995. He concentrated on free style and found excellent coaches in his home country Georgia , which has a long tradition in freestyle wrestling. Especially Leri Jagania and Dawid Churzia were his teachers.

Dawit Modsmanashvili first appeared on the international wrestling mat in 2004, when he took 5th place in the middleweight division at the European Junior Championship (Cadets = up to the age of 18) in Istanbul . In 2006 he reached the 2nd place in the light heavyweight division at the Junior World Championships in Guatemala City (Juniors = up to the age of 20). In the final he was defeated by Alan Loschow from Russia.

In 2007 Dawit Modsmanashvili had the opportunity to gain experience at two large wrestling tournaments. But he couldn't place himself in the front ranks there. At the World Cup in Krasnoyarsk , he had to give up five experienced athletes, including Alireza Rezaei from Iran , Tolly Thompson from the USA and Aljaksej Schamarau from Russia, and came in 6th place. At the World Seniors Championships 2007 in Baku , he won his first fight over Ottó Aubéli from Hungary , but then lost to Fardin Masoumi Valadi from Iran and came in 14th place.

At the European Championships in Tampere in 2008 Modsmanashvili, who is a relatively light heavyweight with 105 kg body weight, surprised with four victories and won the European title. With Rareș Daniel Chintojan from Romania and the multiple world and Olympic champion David Musuľbes , who was inactive for five years, he also defeated two experienced and successful wrestlers.

After the European Championships it was found that Dawit Modsmanashvili was doped . The title was therefore withdrawn from him by the International Wrestling Federation (FILA). He was also banned until April 1, 2010.

At the 2012 Olympics , Modsmanashvili won the silver medal. However, he was also subsequently tested positive for doping ( anabolic steroids ) and got the medal withdrawn in 2019.

Modsmanashvili has competed for Uzbekistan since 2017.
