Tolly Thompson
Tolly Thompson (born June 24, 1973 in Cedar Falls , Iowa ) is a retired American wrestler . He won a bronze medal in free style heavyweight at the 2005 World Championships.
Career
Tolly Thompson attended Janesville High School in Janesville . There he also began wrestling, preferring the free style. No results are known from this time. From 1993 he then attended the University of Nebraska , which he attended until 1997. There he received targeted funding as a freestyle wrestler. He also became a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club . In the course of his career he was coached by a number of coaches. The best known among them are Mike Duroe, Joe Seay, Kevin Jackson and Brad Penrith .
In 1993 he was American junior champion in super heavyweight (class up to 130 kg body weight (KG)) and also American student champion of the AAU (Amateur Athletes Union) in heavyweight (up to 100 kg body weight). Due to these successes he was used in the same year at the Pan American Championship and took second place in the heavyweight division behind Héctor Milián from Cuba .
In the next few years he was only successful at the national level. He did not come to international assignments because in the United States Bruce Baumgartner , Olympic champion and multiple world champion , determined the events on the mat in his weight class and competed in almost all international championships himself. After his resignation after the 1996 Olympic Games, Tolly Thompson received further tough competitors in Kerry McCoy , Stephen Neal , Steve Mocco and Thomas Rowlands in the United States, against whom he was only able to prevail sporadically. Nevertheless, he still had some successes in his further career.
He first won the title as a student wrestler in 1995 at the NCAA Championships (US student championship) ahead of Justin Greenlee and Kerry McCoy. In 1996 he came in 3rd place behind Jeff Walter and Justin Harty in this championship, just as he did in 1997 when he got that place behind Kerry McCoy and Stephen Neal.
In 1998 he was the first US heavyweight champion, but lost in the World Championship elimination (Trials) against Kerry McCoy. Kerry McCoy then started at the World Cup. Tolly Thompson was used at the Pan American Championship in Winnipeg and won the title there ahead of Cuban Alexis Rodríguez Valera . In 2002 he won the title at a Pan American Championship for the second time in Maracaibo , where he again defeated Alexis Rodríguez Valera.
Between 2000 and 2004, he always finished between two and five at the USA championships and the World Championship trials and was not used at any international championships, except for the one in Maracaibo in 2002.
In 2005 he was USA champion for the second time and also won the World Cup elimination from Steve Mocco. At the World Championships in Budapest he lost his first fight against Aydın Polatçı from Turkey , but then won the bronze medal with wins over Rareş Daniel Chintojan from Romania , Wadym Tassoew from Ukraine and Kuramagomed Kuramagomedow from Russia . His victory over Kuramagomedov caused a stir. Before this world championship, he started in Makhachkala ( Dagestan ) in 2005 at the so-called Supercup, a country tournament. He won there over Səlim İşxanov from Azerbaijan , but lost to Biljal Machow from Russia just on points.
In 2006, Tolly Thompson was again American champion and won the World Championship trials again. At the world championship in Guangzhou he first defeated the ex-world champion Eldari Luka Kurtanidze from Georgia , but then lost to Fardin Masoumi Valadi from Iran and ended up in 14th place.
Tolly Thompson was still active until 2008. He really wanted to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. But he failed when he had to retire early in the preliminary fights of the Olympic Trials with defeats to Scott Steele and Les Sigman and only one victory over Zachary Rey. He then announced his retirement as an active wrestler.
Tolly Thompson was an assistant coach in 1999 and 2000 and head coach at Nebraska State University in 2001 and 2002 . He has been the head coach at the University of Northern Iowa since 2003 and lives with his family in Waterloo .
