Aydın Polatçı

Mehmet Aydın Polatçı (born May 15, 1977 in Hafik , Sivas ) is a Turkish wrestler . He was 2005 World Champion in free style at heavyweight.

Career

Aydın Polatçı grew up in his birthplace and started wrestling there in 1993, after having previously played in the Turkish national sport of oil wrestling . He became a heavyweight with a height of 1.90 meters and a body weight of about 125 kg. After initial success in the junior area, he became a member of the Aski Ankara wrestling club , where Mehmet Polatçı was his coach. Aydın Polatçı preferred the free style throughout his career. Only in the military world championships did he also work twice in the Greco-Roman style.

He made his first international start in 1995 at the European Junior Championships in Witten , where he took first place in the heavyweight division of the juniors (up to the age of 18) in free style ahead of Tamás Ábrahám from Hungary and Oleg Chorpjakow from Russia .

In 1997 he competed in several international championships with the juniors, but also with the seniors. At this year's military World Cup, he came in second place in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division behind Alexei Kolesnikov from Russia and in third place behind David Musuľbes from Russia and Alireza Rezaei from Iran . At the Junior European Championships in 1997 in Istanbul and at the Junior World Championships in 1997 in Helsinki , he took first place. In Istanbul he won ahead of Artyom Aschigew from Russia and Aleksi Modebadse from Georgia and in Helsinki ahead of Alexis Rodríguez Valera from Cuba and Artyom Aschigew. After the resignation of the 1996 Olympic champion Mahmut Demir , he was also used in 1997 at the Senior European Championships in Warsaw . But he just missed a medal there. At the 1997 World Cup, Turkey used Zekeriya Güçlü .

In 1998 he became European champion in Bratislava , defeating David Musuľbes, Krassimir Kotschew from Bulgaria , Sven Thiele and Milan Mazáč from Slovakia in sequence. At the 1998 World Cup in Tehran, he lost his first fight against Andrei Shumilin from Russia. After four victorious fights, he then lost in the battle for the bronze medal against the American Kerry McCoy .

1999 Aydın Polatçı lost at the European Championships in Minsk after four victories in the final again against Andrei Schumilin (3: 4 technical points). At the 1999 World Cup in Ankara, he lost in his third fight against the unknown American Stephen Neal , who then became world champion, on points (6:10 technical points). According to the regulations valid at that time, he had to retire and only came in 5th place.

In 2000 he only started at the Olympic Games in Sydney . He won his first fight there against Zsolt Gombos from Hungary, but then lost to the later silver medalist Artur Taymazov from Uzbekistan , which meant his departure.

At the 2001 World Cup in Sofia , Aydın Polatçı finished fifth after losing in the third fight against David Musuľbes. At the 2002 World Cup in Tehran, he won a bronze medal. After a loss in the semifinals against David Musuľbes, he defeated the Georgian Dawit Otiaschwili .

In 2004 Aydın Polatçı won his second international senior title at the European Championships in Ankara. It beat Boschidar Bojadschiew from Bulgaria, Zoltán Farkas from Hungary, Radosław Jankowski from Poland, Sven Thiele and Kuramagomed Kuramagomedow from Russia. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he met after victories over Rareş Daniel Chintojan from Romania, Sven Thiele and Alexis Rodríguez Valera on Artur Taymazov, against whom he was again defeated on points. In the battle for the Olympic bronze medal, he defeated Marid Mutalimov from Kazakhstan . This bronze medal remained the only Olympic medal in his career.

After winning the Mediterranean Games in Almería in 2005 , he joined the World Cup in Budapest that year . There he succeeded with victories over Tolly Thompson from the United States, Rareş Daniel Chintojan, Kurmagomed Kuramagomedow and Alexis Rodríguez Valera for the first time the title win at a world championship.

After that, Aydın Polatçı only started in the Turkish oil rings in 2006 and 2007. In 2008 he tried a comeback. He finished fifth at the European Championships in Tampere after losing to David Musuľbes and Bakhtiyar Akhmedov from Russia. He was also unsuccessful at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . After beating Ivan Ishchenko from Ukraine, he lost to Marid Mutalimov and ended up in 9th place.
