Kerry R. McCoy (born August 2, 1974 in Riverhead , Long Island , New York ) is a retired American wrestler . He was runner-up in the world championship in 2003 and an Olympian in 2000 and 2004 in the free style in heavyweight division.

Career

Kerry McCoy attended Middle Island, New York High School and began wrestling there in 1987. As a high school wrestler, he played 168 free style bouts, of which he won 150. He then attended Pennsylvania State University . He also became a member of the New York Athletic Club at this point . At a height of 1.88 meters, he had grown into a full heavyweight of about 125 kg body weight (KG). His coaches were Hachiro Oishi, Greg Strobel and Kevin Jackson.

The international wrestling career of Kerry McCoy began in 1990 when he finished 2nd behind Lucka Kochija from the Soviet Union at the Junior World Championships (Cadets) in Szombathely in the weight class up to 83 kg . In 1992 he even became Junior World Champion in Cali , Colombia in the weight class up to 88 kg, ahead of Miguel Molina Domínguez from Cuba and Şaban Seçkin from Turkey .

In 1993 he won the USA student championship of the AAU (Amateur Athletes Union) and was then used at the Pan American Games of that year in the heavyweight division (up to 100 kg). He won there before Wayne Weathers from Canada and Luis Marquez from Puerto Rico .

After 1993, Kerry McCoy's international career was interrupted for five years. The reason for this was Bruce Baumgartner , the outstanding American super heavyweight freestyle wrestler of those years, Olympic champion and multiple world champion, who did not vacate a starting place for Kerry McCoy.

He was able to achieve some further successes on a national level, especially as a student wrestler. He became NCAA champion in 1994, came 3rd in these championships in 1995 and won the title at the NCAA Championships for the second time in 1997 (NCAA = American University Sports Association). Between 1994 and 1999, he also always placed in the front of the field at the US championships. In 1996 and 1997 he was runner-up.

After Bruce Baumgartner's resignation, Kerry Mc Coy won the 1998 World Championship elimination from Tolly Thompson and was therefore able to compete in a World Championship for the first time this year. In Tehran he defeated three top-class athletes in the heavyweight division: Andrei Schumulin from Russia , Sven Thiele from Germany and Aydın Polatçı from Turkey. In the semifinals he lost to Alexis Rodríguez Valera from Cuba. In the final battle for the bronze medal, he met Andrei Schumilin again and lost with 0: 3 technical points. As a World Cup debutant, he was very satisfied with 4th place in view of the extremely strong competition.

1999 came Kerry McCoy both in the USA championship, as well as in the world championship trials behind Stephen Neal in each case on the 2nd place and was not used in the world championship. He won the World Cup in Spokane that year . He won over Ebrahim Mehrabi from Iran , Wayne Weathers from Canada, Sven Thiele and Alexis Rodríguez Valera.

In 2000 he was the first American heavyweight champion. He repeated this success four times until 2004. His main rivals were Tolly Thompson, Stephen Neal, Tom Eriksson , Steve Mocco and Thomas Rowlands . He also won the 2000 Olympic Trials and thus won a place in the Olympic Games in Sydney . There he first won over Mirabi Valiyev from Ukraine and Racab Aşabalıyev from Azerbaijan and lost in the quarterfinals to Artur Taymazov , who later won the silver medal and was Olympic champion in 2004 and 2008, just under 9:11. Points. With another victory over Aljaksej Mjadswedseu from Belarus, he still fought for fifth place.

In 2001, Kerry McCoy represented the United States again at the World Cup in Sofia . After victories over Ottó Aubéli from Hungary and Gelegschamtsyn Ösöchbajar from Mongolia , he lost to David Musuľbes from Russia and Alexis Rodríguez Valera and came in fourth.

In 2002 he won the World Championship trials again. His opponent was Thomas Rowlands. At the World Cup that year in Tehran he could not start because the United States did not send wrestlers to this championship. In 2003 he was back at the World Cup in New York . He won there over Duane van Staden from South Africa , Davud Məhəmmədov from Azerbaijan, Marid Mutalimow from Kazakhstan and Alireza Rezaei from Iran and was only defeated in the final against Artur Taymazov, with which he won the World Cup silver medal.

In 2004 Kerry McCoy started for the second time at the Olympic Games after winning the Olympic Trials in front of Tolly Thompson in Athens . After victories over Francesco Miano-Petta from Italy and Juri Mildzikow from Kyrgyzstan, he lost in his third fight against Marid Mulatimow, with which he was eliminated and finished seventh.

After these games he announced his retirement from wrestling. He had been an assistant coach at Pennsylvania State University since 1997 . From 2005 to 2008 he was the head coach at Stanford University and since 2009 he has been the head coach at the University of Maryland . He also coached the wrestlers of Lehigh Valley AC in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania and the Terrapin Wrestling Club College Park , MD. In addition, he was the head coach of the US freestyle team at two world championships and also held important functions in the US wrestling association. He lives with his family in Palo Alto .
