Riverhead is a city on Long Island in Suffolk County and its administrative seat in the American state of New York . It is located on the north coast of Long Island and had a population of 33,506 in 2010.

The city was founded in 1792. The first schoolhouse was built in 1822 and is now a museum elsewhere. In 1901 the city had about 2500 inhabitants. In addition to the actual town center, the districts Aquebogue , Baiting Hollow , Calverton , Jamesport , Northville and Wading River also belong to Riverhead.

Riverhead has a train station on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Greenport , which provides a rail link to New York City . A museum in the city also provides information about the LIRR.

Former wrestler Kerry McCoy was born in Riverhead in 1974.
