Bruce Robert Baumgartner (born August 31, 1960 in Haledon , New Jersey ) is a retired American wrestler .

Career

Bruce Baumgartner, like most American wrestlers, began wrestling in high school. There he has not yet achieved any great success. It wasn't until after he moved to Indiana State University that these came about. In 1978 he became the American junior heavyweight champion and from 1980 he also won many victories in university wrestling. In 1982 he was sent to the World Championships for the first time at the age of 20. He still had to make do with 7th place, but from 1983 success followed success. He was twice Olympic champion , won two more Olympic medals and was also three times world champion, always against the toughest competition. In the United States, he was undefeated for 17 years. After he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002, he was also one of the first to be inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in September 2003 .

After the end of his wrestling career, Bruce Baumgartner continued to wrestle. He is Director of Athletics for the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Edinboro Wrestling Camps and lives in Edinboro , Pennsylvania with his wife and three sons .
