He has been under contract with ASV Nendingen since the 2013/2014 season. At a height of 1.92 meters, he is in the heavyweight division, where he does not fully exhaust the maximum permissible weight of 120 kg with a weight of 110 kg. He's a student.
His international career began in 2010. This year he finished second at the Mediterranean Games in Istanbul behind his compatriot Fatih Çakıroğlu . He also came in 5th at the European Junior Championships in Samokow / Bulgaria and came 2nd at the World Junior Championships behind Muradin Kuschchow from Ukraine .
At the Turkish Championships in 2011 he came in second behind Recep Kara , but before Fatih Çakıroğlu. In 2011 it was not used in international championships. In March 2012 he was used by the Turkish Wrestling Association at the European Championships in Belgrade . He was able to convince there completely and win the European title with victories over Predrag Budic from Serbia , Nick Matuhin from Germany , Bachtijar Schachabutdinowitsch Akhmedov from Russia , Ihor Dsjatko from Belarus and Dániel Ligeti from Hungary .
He then won the ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London by finishing second behind Dániel Ligeti at the tournament in Sofia. At the Olympic Games himself he first won over Oleksandr Chozjaniwskyj from Ukraine, but lost in his second fight against Biljal Machow from Russia. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and came in 8th place. He then closed the 2012 season with another championship title. In Kuortane / Finland he was world champion at universities ahead of Parvis Hadi from Iran.
In 2013 Taha Akgül was again European heavyweight champion in Tbilisi with victories over Jamaladdin Magomedow , Azerbaijan, Dimitar Kumchev , Bulgaria, Dániel Ligeti and Alen Sassejew , Ukraine. At the World Championships this year in Budapest he defeated Christos Nyfadopoulos from Greece, but then lost quite significantly to Alen Sassejew, but then secured a World Cup bronze medal with victories over Florian Temengil, PLW, Jamaladdin Magomedow, Azerbaijan and Tervel Dlagnev , USA .
At the European Championships in 2014, which took place in Vantaa / Finland, he dominated his weight class with ease. With victories over Andranik Galstjan, Armenia, Wadim Schwedow, Belarus, Oleksandr Chozjaniwskyj, Ukraine and Alan Lavrentjewitsch Chugajew , Russia, he won his third European title in a row. On September 8, 2014, Taha Akgül became world heavyweight champion for the first time in Tashkent. On the way to this success he defeated Richard Csercsics, Hungary, Aslan Dschebisow, Azerbaijan, Tervel Dlagnev , USA, Alexei Schemarov , Belarus and Komeil Ghasemi , Iran.
In June 2015 Taha Akgül won the 1st European Games in Baku in the weight class up to 125 kg body weight. He defeated it Jamaladdin Magomedow, Robert Baran from Poland. Soslan Gagojew from Slovakia and Alexei Schemarow. He was also unbeatable at the World Championships that year in Las Vegas in September. He won successively over Jose Cuba Vazquez from Spain, Levan Berianidze from Armenia, Daulet Schabanbay from Kazakhstan, Biljal Machow from Russia, the 2012 Olympic champion and Jamaladdin Magomedow. He won his second world title with it.
Taha Akgül won the heavyweight gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He defeated Chuluunbat Jargalsaichan from Mongolia, Ibrahim Saidau, Belarus, Levan Berianidze and in the final also Komeil Ghasemi from Iran in a convincing style . His victory over Ghasemi was narrow with 3-1 points, but was never in danger.
In May 2017, Taha Akgül continued his winning streak with a victory at the European Championships in Novi Sad. In doing so he defeated u. a. Geno Petriaschwili from Georgia and Jamaladdin Magomedov in the final. He was also a high favorite at the 2017 World Cup in Paris. He initially lived up to this role, because his victories over Zolboo Natsagsuren, Mongolia, Nam Koungjin, South Korea and Nicholas Edward Gwiazdowski from the United States were safe. In the final, he met Geno Petriaschwili, who had increased tremendously in his performance. Taha Akgül felt that too, because in a high-class duel in which the lead changed several times, Geno Petriaschwili ultimately won with 10: 8 points and dethroned Taha Akgül.
At the 2018 European Championships in Kaspiysk, Taha Akgul took revenge against Geno Petriaschwili. In the final battle of this championship he defeated Petriaschwili narrowly but deserved with 2-1 techn. Points and became European champion for the sixth time. Things went less well for him at this year's World Cup, which took place in Budapest in October. Although he won his first two fights on points over Nick Matuhin, Germany and Alexander Chozianiwski, Ukraine, he surprisingly lost in the quarterfinals against Parviz Chodavirdi Hadibasmanj from Iran just 2: 3 techn. Points. Since Hadibasjamj then did not reach the final, Taha Akgül was eliminated and only finished 7th.
At the European Championship 2019 in Bucharest in April this year, Taha Akgül won the title again in a convincing way. In the semifinals he made Ansor Chiriyev from Russia, against whom he had lost in January in the final of the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk, with 8: 0 techn.
