Geno Petriaschwili ( Georgian გენო პეტრიაშვილი ; English Geno Petriashvili ; born January 4, 1994 in Gori ) is a Georgian wrestler . It was 2016 and 2020 European champion and 2017, 2018 and 2019 World Champion and U23 world champion in free style in the heavyweight division . He won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro

Career

Geno Petriaschwili began wrestling as a teenager, focusing on free style.

In 2010 he took part in the first ever Youth Olympics in Singapore, where he won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 100 kg behind Əli Məhəmmədəbirov , Azerbaijan and Abraham de Jesus Conyedo Ruano, Cuba. In 2011 he also won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Zrenjanin in the heavyweight division behind Ihor Dsjatko from Belarus and Aslan Dschebischow from Azerbaijan. At the 2011 European Junior Championships for the "Cadets" age group in Warsaw, he then won his first international title in the weight class up to 100 kg. He won there ahead of Ruslan Gadschijew from Azerbaijan. In August 2011 in Szombathely he became vice world champion in the same age group. In the final he lost against the American Adam Coon .

In 2012, Geno Petriaschwili had to accept a disappointment at the European Junior Championships in Zagreb, because he only finished 10th in the heavyweight division. In September 2012 he won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Pattaya in the heavyweight division behind Magomedgadschi Nurasulow from Russia and Muradin Chuschchow, Ukraine. In December 2012 he caused a little sensation at the Georgian Senior Championship, because he won the heavyweight division there. On the way to this success he suggested u. a. the multiple medalist at world championships Dawit Modsmanashvili and in the final battle also the older and more experienced Giorgi Sakandelidze .

In March 2013, he was therefore used at the European Senior Championships in Tbilisi. As the youngest participant in the heavyweight division, he did not disappoint there, but secured a bronze medal with victories over Boban Danow, Macedonia and Magomedgadschi Nurasulow , a defeat against Alen Zassejew , Ukraine and a victory over Nick Matuhin , Germany . Geno Petriaschwili won the same medal a few months later at the World Championships in Budapest. He defeated Hitender, India and Rares Daniel Chintojan , Romania, then lost to Chadschimurad Gazalow , Russia and secured the bronze medal by beating Deng Zhiwei from China.

In 2014, Geno Petriaschwili was European junior heavyweight champion in Katowice. In the final he defeated Kazbek Chubulow from Russia.

In June 2015 he took part in the 1st European Games in Baku. He defeated Boban Danow from Macedonia and Alexander Chozianowski, Ukraine, in the heavyweight division, then lost to ex-world champion Alexei Schemarow from Belarus, but secured a bronze medal with a victory over Levan Berianidze from Armenia. He won the same medal at the World Championships in Las Vegas in September 2015. He defeated Korey Jarvis from Canada, Alen Sassejew from Ukraine and Aiaal Lazarew from Kyrgyzstan. In the semifinals he lost to Jamaladdin Magomedow from Azerbaijan. In the small final, he then defeated Chuluunbat Jargalsaichan from Mongolia.

In March 2016, Geno Petriaschwili won the first championship title at an international championship among seniors. At the European Championships in Riga, he defeated the multiple world champion Taha Akgül from Turkey in his first fight in the heavyweight division just by points (8: 8), he also won over Dániel Ligeti from Hungary, Alen Sassejew and in the final battle Robert Baran from Poland, the he even shouldered it. He also represented the colors of Georgia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There he came to victories over Dimitar Kumchev from Bulgaria and Alen Sassejew. Against Komeil Ghasemi from Iran he suffered a very narrow defeat with a tie of 4: 4. Then Geno Petriaschwili fought for a bronze medal with victories over Korey Jarvis from Canada and Tervel Dlagnev from the United States .

In August 2017, Geno Petriaschwili became world champion for the first time in Paris. On the way to this success he defeated Ansor Chisriew , Russia, Korey Jarvis, Levan Berianidze from Armenia and Olympic champion Taha Akgül from Turkey. While he defeated all his first three opponents prematurely, which his victory over Taha Akgül with 10: 8 points just deserves. Three months later, Geno Petriaschwili also became U23 world champion in Bydgoszcz. He defeated all of his opponents prematurely. There were Taiki Yamamoto from Japan, Hu Zhangxiang from China, Danilo Kartawii from Ukraine and Magomedamin Dibirow from Russia.

At the 2018 European Championships in Kaspiysk, Geno Petriaschwili met Taha Akgül again in the final battle. He lost this fight just 1: 2 techn. Points and therefore only came in 2nd place at this European Championship. At this year's World Cup in Budapest in October 2018, however, he repeated his title win from the previous year. He won over Daniel Ligeti, Hungary, Ansor Ruslanowitsch Chisriew, Russia, Parviz Chodavirdi Hadibasmanj, Iran and in the final over Deng Zhiwei from China, whom he won with 6-0 techn. Points sure hit. His main rival Taha Akgül had already failed in the quarterfinals against Parviz Khodavirdi Hadi Basmanj.

At the European Championships in Bucharest in 2019, Geno Petriaschwili reached the final with three wins against Taha Akgül, against whom he had no chance on that day and clearly with 0: 7 techn. Lost points. At the 2019 World Cup in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), Geno Petriaschwili faced Taha Akgül again in the final. At first it looked like he would lose again to Taha Akgül, as he did at the European Championships in Bucharest, because he was 4-0 down at halftime. But he then managed to equalize 4: 4 before Taha Akgül took the lead again with 6: 4 points shortly before the end. With an energetic performance, Geno Petriaschwili managed to equalize 6: 6 and therefore won based on the last score.

At the European Championship 2020 in Rome, Geno Petriaschwili became European champion for the second time after 2016. On the way to this success he defeated four wrestlers, in the final the Poland Robert Baran .
