Komeil Ghasemi (born February 27, 1988 in Sary, Mazandaran ) is an Iranian wrestler . He won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and a silver medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 , both times in the heavyweight free style .

Career

Komeil Ghasemi started wrestling as a teenager in 1999. He belongs to the Zahid Farii Mazandaran sports club , but has also started for the Sadra Zirab club . He was or is trained by Hossein Naribi and Hassan Esmailipour. He wrestles exclusively in free style. The student is 1.83 meters tall and began his international career in light heavyweight and has been wrestling in heavyweight since 2010.

In 2007 he took part in the Junior World Championship in Beijing , where he won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division, which he won after a loss to Alen Saseev , Russia, by winning the small final over William Harth from Germany . In 2008 he was Asian junior light heavyweight champion in Doha before Ganboldyn Gannjam from Mongolia. In the same year he won a bronze medal again at the Junior World Championships in Istanbul in the light heavyweight division. He also fought for this by winning the small final over a German wrestler, namely Kevin Schwänke .

In the following years he was initially not used in international championships. That was because the competition for high-performance wrestlers in Iran is very great. In 2010, however, he competed in the heavyweight division of the Asian Championships in Tashkent , where he finished second behind the Olympic champion Artur Taymazov from Uzbekistan .

In 2012 he prevailed in the inner-Iranian elimination competitions for the Olympic Games in London and represented his country there. He won in London over Arjan Bhullar from Canada , but lost in his second fight against Artur Taymazov. In the consolation round he still fought for an Olympic bronze medal with victories over Nick Matuhin from Germany and Tervel Dlagnev from the United States .

On May 15, 2013, Komeil Ghasemi represented his country in the legendary international match in New York, which took place between Iran and the United States as part of the fight to remain in the Olympic program, defeating Tervel Dlagnev. In 2013 he also competed at the World Championships in Budapest. He defeated Daulet Schabanay from Kazakhstan and Aiaal Lasarew from Kyrgyzstan, but then lost to Tervel Dlagnev and was eliminated because he did not reach the final. He came in 10th place.

At the Team World Cup in Los Angeles in March 2014, which was won by Iran, it was used three times in the new weight class up to 125 kg. He won over Ansor Chisrijew , Russia, Andrak Galstjan, Armenia and Tornike Tschidescheli, Georgia. In April 2014 he won the Asian Championship in this weight class ahead of Natsagsürengiin Dsolbood , Mongolia, Daulet Schabanay and Shang Hai, China. In September 2014, Komeil Ghasemi won a world championship medal for the first time. At the World Championships in Tashkent he defeated Alexander Khozianiwski , Ukraine, Deng Zhiwei from China, Kurban Kurbanow from Uzbekistan and the defending champion Chadschimurad Gazalow from Russia in the weight class up to 125 kg . In the final he lost to Taha Akgül from Turkey just on points (3: 4). He became vice world champion.

In 2015 he finished 2nd in the same weight class at the Asian Championships in Doha. In the final, he lost somewhat surprisingly against the hitherto largely unknown Aiaal Lasarew from Kyrgyzstan. At the world championship this year in Los Angeles, Parivz Chodavirdi Hadi Basmanj represented the Iranian colors in the weight class up to 125 kg, but he only finished 9th.

Since this place was not enough to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, an Iranian heavyweight first had to fight for a starting place for Rio in the Olympic qualifying tournaments. Komeil Ghasemi did this in March 2016 by winning the qualifying tournament in Astana in a convincing manner. He won there ahead of Daulet Schabanbay from Kazakhstan, Aiaal Lazarew and Deng Zhiwei.

In the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro he was in excellent shape and won the weight class up to 125 kg over Korey Jarvis, Canada, Diaaeldin Kamal Gouda Abdelmottaleb, Egypt, Geno Petriaschwili , Georgia and Tervel Dlagnev , USA, but lost again in the final against Taha Akgül. With that he won the silver medal.

After that he was no longer at the start of any international individual championships.

In 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 he was part of the Iranian team at Team World, which won in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and finished 2nd in 2019. In 2015 in Los Angeles he was used twice, defeating Tanju Gemici from Turkey and Zach Rey from the United States. In 2016 he competed twice in Los Angeles, defeating Said Gamidow, Azerbaijan and Muradi Kuschchow from Russia. In 2017 he started three times in Kermandshah, beating Salim Ercan, Turkey, Krishan Krishan, India and Nick Gwiasdowski from the United States. At the 2019 World Cup in Yakutsk he started again three times and defeated Chuderbulga Dorjchand, Mongolia, Anthony Nelson, United States and Rolande Andriadze, Georgia. So he remained victorious in all 13 fights in which he was used.
