Kuortane [ ˈkuɔrtɑnɛ ] is a rural municipality in western Finland with 3572 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).
Kuortane, like the surrounding towns, has been one of the centers of Finnish tar distillery since the 17th century ; today the wood and metal processing industries are the main employers.
Kuortane is the birthplace of the architect Alvar Aalto . Kuortane is also known in Finland for its sports academy ( Kuortaneen Urheiluopisto ), which operates , among other things, the Kuortane team , a women's ice hockey team in the top division.
